Because they listened to their customers! They even talked about it during the presentation. They said they wanted to partner again with LG since the N5 was so loved by customers. Last year, people were asking for an updated N5 and lots were disappointed when the N6 was released. A huge phone, from a different manufacturer, for almost double the price of the previous model.

I find it truly amazing that a company as big and powerful as Google actually listened to the customers and gave them what they wanted in updating the N5 to the 5x. I know it's specs aren't as great as the 6P but it is exactly what it should be: an updated version of the N5, similarly priced to the N5.

I really think that the 6P is this years Nexus and the 5x is a big Thank You to the customers who supported the N5 so much and who wanted to see it updated. Yes, they will make lots of money and that is another reason they did this but I can't think of another company who listens to their customers so well.

I commend Google for making the 5x!

The original Nexus 5 was a beloved phone by many and I remember users asking for an updated version of it and Google and LG answered. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to own the Nexus 5 and currently still happy with my Moto X 2nd Gen but I am sure tempted to own the Nexus 5x.

I did love my Nexus 5 but definitely had to move on from it as the camera was pretty bad. But, to your point OP, they listened and put in an excellent camera!

You cannot escape the fact that the phone landscape has significantly changed since the N5 and if you are right, Google made a big mistake. Not in the idea of coming out with a replacement or the fondness everyone had towards the N5, but what specs a phone today would need to truly do the original justice.

I was someone who just missed the N5 and instead went with the Moto G 2014. I was really hoping I would get a second chance with the new 5X, but it just doesn't compete with even the mid-rangers out now. I badly wanted a powerful 5.2 inch 1080p or greater phone running vanilla android. It had to have 3+GB of ram, at least a 615 processor (or an intel like the Asus), a very good camera, 64GB storage and/or 32GB with a sdslot. Taking design out of mix for the moment.

Problem is, I think that if this phone was anything but a Nexus, it wouldn't get the love. So although I agree with much of your statement, you can't get beyond what the phone actually is or what it should have been. In that context, I feel let down.

? But the 5x has a 1080p screen, it is 5.2 inches, it runs the Snapdragon 808 which is no slouch as current flagships have it (Moto x pure edition, lg g4, lg v10), and it has same camera as 6p which is rated 3rd on DXOmark, which may not mean anything besides the fact that its able to compete with the likes of top end devices which is above and beyond any previous nexus. It doesnt have a sd card but googles nexus program never does because its not what google envisions in android, so that was wishful thinking on your behalf. The only thing missing here is the 3+ gb of ram. Seeing as google built Marshmallow Im sure the 2gbs is more than ample enough to keep up with tasks. The oneplus 2 has similiar specs as does the motox pure edition. What midranger does the device not compete with?

I don't understand how when you get the 32gb nexus 5x you only save 75 off getting a way better n6p

But it *IS* a nexus.

Yup. Makes the 5x price seem about $100 too high. Aluminum+screen size+screen res+amoled+bigger battery+camera options+faster charging+stereo speakers = $75? Something not right there.

I still think the 5x is a great deal. Everyone keeps using the size of the 6p as an advantage but some people weigh the size of the 5x as an advantage. I have an iPhone 6s Plus already and I can't imagine getting a phone (6p) that is taller than this beast.

Considering the Moto G 8gb model has only 1GB and runs okay I think 2GB should be sufficient for the next couple years. Heck, the iPhone just got 2gb of memory this year.

This is the trump card. No other phone can claim the same benefits. Most cant put a quantifiable value to the pure google experience and immediate updates. This is the real reason to buy a Nexus. If specs matter so much more to you, then Nexus really isnt the answer. The throw in here is that Google included one of the top 2 cameras to be had at the moment, as well as the new sensor tech. So for camera and Google bobos, who dont mind the rest, this is nirvana. I guess they cant make everyone happy short of bumping the price out of most buyer's price range.

I would say Motorola is pretty close to it. My Moto X Pure Edition will get M pretty soon. Not as instant as a Nexus but usually they are next in line :).

I agree but I still prefer the Nexus experience over what Moto offers. It's probably all in my head but just seeing non Google Moto Stuff on there drive's me nuts. Granted, the Moto stuff is mostly useful when compared to Samsung, LG, etc...

And that's fine -- I was just pointing out that the "No manufacturer can say that" thing isn't as bad as it sounds (as in we don't wait on carrier updates which takes months) :).

Yeah - should have amended that by saying "updates where you dont have to go through the whole rigmarole of cleaning out the bloatware after every update." Not sure if that is true with Moto though... just curious, since google ownership of Moto was brief, do you think they will continue to update phones quickly as they age in the same manner that Nexus does? Or do you think they drop off in priority much quicker than aging Nexus phones?

Yeah they should keep up with the updates. They advised they are focusing on bringing quick (but quality) updates ASAP. I read an article earlier (I would have to find it) that the Pure Edition should have Android M around November which isn't bad. As for the bloat there isn't really any. It is stock Android -- You download the Google apps. The only real "bloat" would be about 4 apps from Moto (their hands free stuff and assistant) but they're small :).
