Why has Gboard suddenly lost the ability to search emojis?

Moto e5, upgraded yesterday from an e4. I am using the SIM card from the old phone (if that matters). Suddenly today I can't search emojis (my main problem) and GIFs and a few other things don't work as they used to. It used to work so well! I tried uninstalling updates, rebooting, disabling, force stop, rebooting a few more times, clearing cache, etc., and I've been through every setting I can find. It used to work so well, and now . . . Please help. Thank you in advance.

I moved this from the Android Apps forum to the General Help forum since the former is intended for developers to promote their apps.

Is there a search bar to begin with, or is that gone as well?

Search bar is gone also, yes.

Along the bottom, when I clicked the emoji symbol, I used to get GIFs, camera, etc. That is no longer there. (And I could search it all!) That row does sort of reappear when I click the plus sign formerly used just for photos.

Go to the Gboard settings, select Preferences, then make sure the Show Emoji Switch Key toggle is turned on.

Can you show a screenshot of what you see when you tap the emoji icon in Gboard?

You try reset gboard, clear its data, then force stop.

Yup. Did all those things and more already.

Can you uninstall the update to gboard ? If u can don't let it update see if previous version is ok.

Try another keyboard like swiftkey , you have same problem?

If you're not using the beta Messages Gboard app, try enrolling in the beta program for it in the Play Store.

I tried uninstalling updates yesterday. Didn't fix it.

No, not just in the message app. Anywhere I need a keyboard the problem is present.
