why has my android device stopped acceting new incoming messages via gmail?

My android device is only displaying messages received from yesterday. I suspected this was wrong and checked with another computer. I was right - it is not updating since yesterday. What can I do?

Welcome to Android Central! Which device do you have? Are you using the stock Email app, or the Gmail app? Does this happen on both wi-fi and mobile data (3G/4G)?
