Why has my battery life diminished since upgrading to Lollipop (M8)?

re:

Icebike you got lucky. I tried the same thing. Letting it run out of juice and charging it while being off. No luck. Tomorrow I'm taking it back to the shop to they can downgrade it to 4.4.4. No more Lollipop for me.

re:

Update...Battery life is now holding up quite nicely with location services completely turned off with power saving mode turned on it lasted me 26 hours with 22% battery left. Wifi turned on all the time, maybe 2 hours bluetooth turned on and maybe 4-5 hours on mobile data. Facebook messenger is still crappy though.

That's good to hear.
Like you, I run on wifi 24/7 and power savings turned on as well. I also never turn location services off. It really uses very little power, because it knows you are always within 50 feet of your wifi anyway.

You just have to dial down Facebook interactions. You can probably live without knowing what your friends had for lunch. Its a Facebook problem, don't blame HTC or Lollipop.

I've been 16 hours on battery, and I have 67% left.

Using the Facebook messenger app, I came across an issue where when I sent a message on my HTC One M8 running stock android 5.0.1 with sense 6 unlocked, it would sometimes freeze for around 10 seconds, locking up both the app and most of the functionality of my phone.
Since I've had this issue and have been able to replicate it after using HTC's tool to reinstall my OS and only the messenger app, I figure other people will as well.
Sorry for the keywords, trying to make this google-able on the chance other people have this issue with their HTC One M8 on lollipop unlocked or developer edition phone using the Facebook messenger app.
The issue seems to come from the in-app sounds. When my phone is on silent or vibrate, I can send messages without the hang or lag, but as soon as I turn the ringtone volume up passed muted, it starts to go really slow again.
My solution to this is to go into the fb messenger app settings, and uncheck the box that says "in-app sounds".
I have sent multiple reports of the bug to Facebook, so hopefully it'll be patched soon enough.

re:

Thanks for the solution, this also explains why messenger didn't lag when using apps which made sound, like Twitch stream or spotify.

Glad it's fixed for you guys, but I don't see how using twitch or Spotify are involved. Do those apps suppress Facebook sounds.

Re: Android lollipop battery and messenger app problem after the update on the m8

I think they suppressed the sound when sending a message, the clicky sound or whatever. Kinda weird to lag for that reason though

Before lollipop, with 4.4.4. I could have location on with battery saving setting, power saver off, auto brightness, 3g and Wi-Fi on all day and every app I could think of. During the night time I would activate power saver and turn off Wi-Fi and 3g. The battery would last around 1 day and 5 to 10 hours until I got to 35-40 percent. Medium to intense use.
On Lollipop things are not so good. The battery on the same setup and usage is around 19 hours. And I can see it dropping while using the phone. Facebook apps are not guilty. I kept the phone factory state for 2 days. Same battery drainage. It's a week now since I installed the update.
I powered it off and rebooted it. Did 2 factory resets and deleted cache 2 times.
It beats me what it can be and how people got better battery with lollipop within days of the update.
I'm open for suggestions and solutions. I'm considering downgrading back to 4.4.4. 2 animations, 3 design updates and 4 new features are not worth dumping the battery like that. On 4.4.4 it used to be the best phone out there for me. Now it kinda sucks.

Re: Android lollipop battery and messenger app problem after the update on the m8

To be honest I had the same issues when upgraded to 4.4.4 from 4.4.3 but after a factory reset the battery life on 4.4.4 started to behave it self and act like the previous version... I think the best thing is to do a factory reset and then install apps slowly to see which apps are maybe having a drain on lollipop...

i have the exact same problem, i didnt noticed my battery life draining more raspidly, but i have this messenger bug when i whant to send a message my hole phone freeze for 5sec

Re:

Thank you man. This actually worked for me. Instantly. Idk about the battery life issue people are having. I am also having it as well. But this little fix sure did work. Again. thank you. This has been killing me.
