Why has my GOS icon gone from my status bar?

gps icon gone from status bar

the gps icon has gone from my status bar, i think since i allowed an update, and i can't find how to get it back.

i have a 'location' icon instead - is that the same?

I need it because the accuweather app that displays on my desk clock won't update and i'm told its probably because my gps is off. i'm trying to get it to display the temp in centigrade instead of F but it looks frozen so this was my first step towards changing it.

if i cant turn my gps on and off as required, does that have an implication for battery life?

There are some apps that use location that do not cause your GPS icon to appear in the notification bar, having said that I can only assume that you've gone into settings and tried to manually turn on your location services and/or GPS. If you want to check if this is working simply open Maps. It will cause the GPS icon to appear, if enabled. That will answer at least 2 of your questions; "is the location icon taking the place of your GPS icon after the update", and "is your GPS working". If it isn't working then maps will not be able to find you on the map. As for your battery question, Android has been a lot better in the last few OS updates with handling peripherals that aren't running, i.e. GPS, BlueTooth, Wi-Fi, so even if enabled they shouldn't be needlessly running if there is no demand. So will affect your battery, probably a little, just because now if an app or service needs access to that information it can ping it where if you had them off it would just look for and not receive the information. I wouldn't think it would be noticeable if there was any change at all.

As for your app being frozen I would try force closing it in your app manager and restarting it, or removing the widget from your screen and adding it back. By adding it back it should take you through the setup again and thus allowing you to make the change from F to C.
