Why has my Stock text messaging app slow to a crawl?

I had this issue a while back. I still had all of my text messages from when I got my first Android phone back in the Froyo days. Thousands of messages.

Backed up the texts, deleted them all, and performance became snappy again.

My LG G4 Marshmallow also opens conversation in stock SMS app very slow although I have only 4 SMSs stored. I heard some recommendations on using Textra as the alternative messaging app, but I like the feature of SMS spam filter based on keyword that the stock one has but Textra doesn't have.

I just installed Textra and it is working great. I have like 60,000 texts and it seems to have fixed my problem

Get SMS backup and backup all your texts. Then wipe the data clean for SMS stock. See if that speeds things up. If it does then you know what the problem is...too many for the stock app to handle. You can then restore all your texts. See if it's still slow...if it is then either delete the texts you don't need, or get another SMS app and see if you can sync the old ones into the new app.
