Why has this phone become so painfully slow??

My wife and I both have a One M8...well, I did, just switched to a Note, but my wife still has hers. My question is.....what on earth is wrong with HTC these days?
I'm not sure if it's how HTC's android updates are going through (and perhaps it's the build my local carrier is doing - Telstra in Australia) - but HTC is ludicrously slow. Think, using a computer with spyware and about 1% free in C: slow. Just laggy and unresponsive. Compared to the Note 3 which I'm currently using now which is completely snappy.
The HTC was like this when it first came out, but now even if we factory reset, as soon as we load our stuff back on (and plenty of room to spare), it's terribly slow again.
So, any idea what's going on?

Are you using any type of Virus protection? This is typically unnecessary and runs in the background slowing down your phone massively.
There could also be other apps running in the back ground. But typically Virus Progs are the culprit.
Try factory reset and installing 1 app at a time until you notice the issue to narrow down the app causing your problems

No virus protection or anything like that sitting in the background. Really, there aren't many apps I use, to be honest, that aren't already included..and my wife uses different apps, but also doesn't use a huge amount. Suggesting the problem isn't 3rd party apps (well, I use Textra now because HTC no longer know how to make a functioning messaging app, but the appalling performance of HTC's messaging app is a well known problem)

I use Textra as well, but thinking twice with the newest update with the stupid message bubble animations.
What about Bluetooth, and GPS related apps. BY specifically is the phone maybe trying to connect over and over to something on BT and can't

Try cache wipe procedure in recovery can sometimes help with poor performance and other issues.

I am having very similar problems. It all started some time after the marshmallow update from VZ. I have not added any new apps yet it is extremely laggy. Sometimes a screen press won't even register for several seconds, even as much as 10 secs or more, Rebooting helps briefly. I have not reset because of the pain of it all but am may just have to or look for a new phone, which is also a PIA. Thoughts would be much appreciated.
