Hello all! I am not sure that this is the correct forum for this post... if not my apologies. Also, this isn't meant to be an anti-Android or pro-WP8 bash fest just a friendly conversation starter.
I have been on Android for about three years now. My first device was the HTC Inspire running ICS and it was OK for what I was asking it to do. Not particularly fast or stable, but I was mostly satisfied at the time. Unfortunately, ATT and HTC completely stopped supporting it less than a year into my contract which led to no updates and an over all terrible experience as the phone got older. Granted, I purchased it at the end of the product life cycle but I would have still expected it to perform well for at least the contract period. Despite my experiences, I decided to go with the Nexus 4 as my new phone and for the most part it is been a pleasant experience. There is virtually no lag and it is a nice phone. However, I find that I have to constantly tweak and fiddle with it to get respectable battery life and optimal performance which is something I just don't want to do. I have never been into rooting or custom ROMs nor have I really been a power user on my phone (the fewer apps I can get away with the better).
The strength of Android is also it's greatest weakness: It's so open that they are almost their own worst enemy when it comes to OS updates and performance in general. Sure people like to blame the carriers for this, but when you have so many different versions of the same OS running on hundreds of phone models it really is impossible to keep a design and performance standard. I just feel as though I have been, for lack of a better word, conned by Google into constantly upgrading my phone just to have a well functioning device. I really shouldn't have to pay $600+ dollars for a phone just to get software updates on time. Granted, there is the N4 but it is really only fully supported by T-Mobile and while it is a good device it does have some shortcomings (which I'm sure have been debated here so I won't get into them).
So that is how I find myself at this crossroads: Continue my dissatisfaction with Android, go iOS, or WP8. I chose WP8 because I was never a huge iOS fan and I think Microsoft in general is headed in a good direction. That's not to say that I think all Google services are awful: Google Music is fantastic, YouTube is great, and I have been a Gmail user since it was created. Hopefully one day soon they will realize that developing for MS is not the end of the world so people like me can still continue to use them on a different platform. It may be a case of "grass is always greener" so I could find myself running back to my N4 in a few weeks time, but I intend to give WP8 a fighting chance first. I just purchased a Lumia 920 off Amazon for $350 and will continue using ATTs prepaid LTE plan. Everything I have heard about this phone has been overwhelmingly fantastic (I actually have a few friends looking at getting WP8 phones as well) so I am excited to expand my horizons.
Cheers!
