Why I wouldn't mind if the nexus 4 wasnt a huge hit to the public...

I guess I'm at odds with most of you all. I want NEXUS to be a status symbols. I want people to look at the back of my phone and know that I care about what kind of phone I invest my time and money in; I care about my phone keeping up to date with security updates and that I want a consistent experience on all of my devises, and if someone doesn't know what it means to own a NEXUS that is exactly what I would tell them. I don't think being a status symbol is a bad thing, it just depends what you stand for.

A lot of posters here are correct regarding the pop culture element of marketing. When a new iPhone is being released every individual over the age of 5 is aware and talking about it. Willing to stand in line and it is a major news story to show the lines outside Apple stores everywhere. I talk to a lot of people in all fields who know nothing about the Nexus or are remotely aware that Google even makes a phone.

I hope it will be hugely sucessful but I also doubt it will reach the level of iPhone or for that matter Apple insanity.

As long as it is a big enough success for Google to continue the Nexus program every year, and hopefully be as competitively priced as they are this year!

I think the Nexus 4 / 7 / 10 is the start of something great for Google!!

Simply because I don't want the general public buying this device solely because its a pop culture statement (ahem apple fanboys - maybe not all of them but a huge majority)... I kinda want googles nexus line to stay with us techies and developers... not ppl who buy stuff because it looks pretty and because everyone else has one...

I get a good feeling in public when I see all the grandmas, housewives and kids using Iphones and thinking to myself.... thank god I'm not using what they are...

I unno I'm such an ass lol

Flame away.

Just as bad as the elitist attitudes iPhone owners supposedly have.

Oh you have no idea. I tried convincing a girl to buy the Nexus 4, and geez that didn't go well. They are all about "Ohhh but I want a white phone! And the iPhone is sooo pretty", I mean c'mon that thing looks the same for over two years now.......

I swear never try convincing a girl to buy this. Waste of time.

My wife loves it and is getting it this month

I find that kinda weird actually. I dont care which phone anyone uses. Cell phones are a dime a dozen. IMO there is no status symbol at all with them. 10 year old kids have smartphones. Most wont care what it means to have a Nexus and ive always laughed at the iPhone fanboys that think having an iPhone helps them get chicks...LOL.

I want the phone to be a big hit just because of the way they are selling it. Low cost, unlocked, with no contract. With new innovations every 6 months it feels, 2 year contracts are obsolete. But they'll continue to be the model unless something like this takes off.

here in texas things are more competitive from what I see. on some college campuses, Galaxy is carrying the flag for 'Droidheads. its the 'to be desired'... even the fanbois will reluctantly admit "yeah, the Galaxy is a nice phone, but....." fill in the blank. its almost like a line is forming in the sand, just over the 30'something age area.... the teens are too stupid to matter... the 20'somethings can be enticed by the Droid vibe - but in the mid-30's of full-employment folk, iphone is still the snobbery - but to really be cool you have to have at least the iphone latest gen, one or more ipads, and a macbook air... just the iphone makes you a poser...

I want this Nexus to succeed. I think it's high time the carriers got shaken up a little bit and put in their place as carriers. I didn't like the landline phone company back when you had to buy your phones from them for exorbitant fees, and I like it even less now that wireless carriers are doing it.

I hope Verizon and Sprint and others are encouraged, no, FORCED, by market forces and not law to release specifications for accessing their one-off CDMA networks so you don't have to buy a phone built specifically for them to operate on their network.

I hope the carriers all see that a nonstandard implementation of LTE is an implementation of LTE that is not valuable enough to have to justify being locked in to a specific carrier, and adopt interoperable VoLTE standards moving forward so I can freely move from one carrier to another with my existing phone.

I hope that carrier subsidies turn into one option among many.

I don't think Nexus can do this alone, but I think a heavy adoption of this phone will drag a whole bunch of people into the unlocked phone arena, where carriers get instant feedback in the form of customers leaving en masse if they do something weapons-grade stupid, and aren't in their current state

Hey, if you're gonna dream, dream pretty big, right? LOL

Though I definatly understand where you're comming from, I am hoping for it te be a massive sucess for two reasons:
1) I would love to see lots of good accessories, ottyerboxes, LifeProof cases, and gidgets galore which can be tricky with android phones.
2) This reason isnt great but I will be arranging for my GF to have one, I talked her from a iPhone to a BB (which she loves.....but misses some important apps and sort of wants to go back to iPhone) so with this phone I want her to have a phone that even a non techie recognizes as an awesome phone....and sadly one of the biggest keys to that is mass acceptance and device proliferation.......

Like the HOX did or the iPhone always has? If anything, Google is following the others, not leading things down a terrible blind alley.

As Phil has noted, manufacturers are starting to move away from both things because it allows thinner builds and tighter structures. No removable back means no flexing which makes things feel cheap. Should they have offered a 32GB or 64GB model? Sure, and since I'm buying one immediately, it should come along in about 3 months just as it did with my Nexus 7 purchase. You're welcome, procrastinators!

Meanwhile Samsung has both and outselling everyone. Also for the longest it was the thinnest phone out until the iPhone 5 so that has nothing to do with it

Taking away features is never a good thing

I wouldn't mind if it weren't a great hit; it probably isn't geared for that. But I do want it to be a hit. This is a fantastic, top of the line device for an incredibly inexpensive price tag. It is also probably the best phone for anyone that wants to leave the contract world and take charge of their phone bills with prepaid.

Please forgive me for disagreeing with you on the above.

I have to disagree, because no phone that is lacking in the most current and up to date hardware should be classified as top of the line. Case in point, this Nexus does not have LTE for any of the largest carriers. AT&T, VZW, and even Sprint have LTE. The predecessor to the Nexus 4 did offer the consumer and LTE model.

I do understand why the phone doesn't have LTE. But, all that amounts to me is Google telling the biggest carriers, since you do not want to play by our rules, we are taking our ball and going home.

So great phone, yes but, top of the line? Only if it were have back in time to 2010.

Pauldroud, apparently you dont understand why it doest bave LTE. This phone is released to the world not just the USA and most of the world doesn't have LTE so no, they didnt just cater to a couple of US carriers. Sorry you dont like it, but it doesnt bother me. We dont have to buy it. I think it is more an issue that it lacks memory than LTE. The world uses memory for movies, music, etc... And please dont tell me about the cloud. That isnt a good option for everyone.

Rayzaa, thank you oh so very much for the downright condescending and patronizing comment.

Unfortunately, your opinion of what I understand is wrong.

In the future, please do not attempt to refer to me specifically I would prefer not to make this topic or any other in this forum something personal.

Thanks!

The previous generation Nexus phone had models that were compatible with LTE networks. LTE is the latest network technology.

If you care about what a true "Nexus" is, you care about it too much. A Nexus is whatever Google allows to be called a Nexus. You don't get to make that decision.

Not having having the option of an LTE-compatible model is a downgrade, IMO.

Google wants to play this "no carrier interference game". How 'bout they work on their storefront first?

And just like the "no LTE" argument - if the Nexus 4 doesn't have enough memory for you, then you don't have to buy it either.
