Just upgraded on vzw from razr maxx to s5. I didn't expect battery life on the S5 to match the razr, but yesterday, my battery was down 20% in 2 hours , 50% usage coming from exchange services. I have it set up to push, just like i did with my razr. just syncing inbox and sent email folders.

I unplugged last nite after fully charging it, left it alone while i slept, and after 8 hours, it was down 44%, 70% from exchange services (i expect exchange to be using up the battery while i sleep, considering the display etc is not being used. However, i only got 4 emails during the night. Being in push mode should mean more battery for more emails.

1. is anyone else seeing this
2. if so, is there a solution
3. could it be i have defective phone (doubtful since everything else works fine)

Have you tried clearing cache for exchange? Go to Settings>Application Manager>swipe over to all apps>scroll down to exchange>click on it>click clear cache.

Re: Help, exchange services killing my battery

thanks, will try it, but since i just got the phone on Thu nite, not sure i really need to do this...

is there an extended battery for this phone?

Re: Help, exchange services killing my battery

I also had this issue the first time I setup exchange. I just deleted the account and re-loaded it and my battery life has been awesome ever since. If your situation was like mine, your phone was getting noticeable warm which is always a good indicator that something is keeping the processor running at full speed.

On another note, I did eventually update my settings to retrieve email every 5 mins rather than push during peak hours. As a blackberry user in the past, I've always used push mail, but after running into the battery problems, I thought about it and realized that it's OK for me to get an email 5 minutes after someone sends it rather than instantaneously. I know that this is a personal decision /preference, but I can say that battery life on my S5 has been amazing, and I attribute at least a part of this to moving away from push mail through exchange.

Re: Help, exchange services killing my battery

I just want to subscribe to this thread. I'm thinking about giving up my blackberry for a S5, tried one last night at Target and I was a little wowed by it. I have an exchange account so this is good information to have.

Re: Help, exchange services killing my battery

I had the same problem w/ my Galaxy S3. I have my business email and Hotmail coming to the built-in email client on the phone. For hotmail to work, it uses "exchange services". Remove hotmail (or any Microsoft email) and download Outlook app from the play store. I did this and exchange services has NEVER shown up again. Simply problem solved. My battery will last for hours and hours

Re: Help, exchange services killing my battery

I have it as well on my Sony experia S. Exactly the same behaviour. After an update of the phone. So I have the feeling that this is android related, not related to the phone.
I switched of push now (and started to sync every 5 mins as well) after reading this thread here and it's immediately better.

best regards, Robbert

Re: Help, exchange services killing my battery

I had this problem aswel when i downloaded my entire email database (all mails downloaded to device on full size). The outlook app is neat and decent but i really like the built in email app.
I fixed this problem by deleting my account (took 20 minutes T_T), re-adding my account but i've selected the option to fetch mails that are less than two weeks old. Device runs faster again, CPU doesnt get scary hot and exchange services eat around 6-10% of my battery (i receive around 30 emails a day, size varies from 20kb to 5mb).

Hi, I just switched from Apple to Android (Galaxy S5) and am having the same trouble. Problem is, I don't quite know how to do what you describe. Did you just "remove" the exchange account and log in again? Or did you delete the whole app? I know this is probably a really stupid question, but I'm completely new to this operating system and would appreciate any and all help!

The problem is not the phone. It is exchange.

Log into OWA.
Go to mobile devices. (On my account every phone I ever had connected to exhange was listed.)
Delete all of them. (Including the one you have now.)
On your phone 1. Force stop 2. Clear data and cache 3. Delete account. 4. Restart 5. Re-add exchange services.

Give it about a day. The exchange drain will drop way down the list. (On mine went from 60% to 5%)

I also changed from push to every 15min, but I had tried this prior to finding the OWA solution with no change.

Hope this helps. If already posted ... consider this confirmation.

Had the same battery drain problem, and saw that exchange services was the number one user of my battery.

Turns out that when I reset my password at work, it broke sync on my phone. I believe i saw a notification that authentication wasn't working, but swiped it away or something. Instead of prompting me again, it decided to CONSTANTLY attempt to reconnect to the server. When I went into the account settings later, I could see it toggling between "Sync Now" and "Cancel Sync" quickly and continuously.

Just had to go into the account settings and enter the new password and the sync started working right.
