Why is half of my Samsung S4 mini screen black?

Samsung s4 mini black screen

When switching on my phone after a flight there was only half of the normal home screen photo, the bottom half was black. Switched phone off and switched it on a couple of days later and whole screen is now completely black so phone is unusable. Connected phone to pc to upload the photos and it says 0 items. I can get the photos off the memory card when put in the card reader but can get photos from phone memory. Is the fact I can't upload photos on phone memory a result of the black screen problem?

If you plug your phone into your computer with the correct drivers installed, can you access the file system to get the information off the phone? Sounds like the screen is dead and would need replacement.
