Why is my Android People app deleting my Google contacts?

AC Question

Yesterday, I added a new contact on my Droid Razr and it automatically synced to my Google contacts. Google is the only account on my phone. Soon after syncing with Google, the new contact was deleted from the People app on my Razr. The new contact is still in my Google contacts and shows up on my other devices (PC and iPad). All my other Google contacts sync OK with the Razr and changes made to a Google contact on another device are accurately reflected on the Razr. Only this one contact does not show up on the Razr. How do I fix this?

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

Welcome to Android Central! Open Contacts, tap Menu>Contacts to Display. Is it set to All?

What happens if you try to enter the same contact again into the phone?

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

My Contacts to Display was set to ALL. When I re-entered the same contact information on the phone, it initially showed up on the Razr, then after a few seconds, it disappeared again. A duplicate contact entry showed up on my other devices and when I went to my Google contacts online and searched for duplicate entries, it found the duplicates.

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

Very odd. Is there anything unconventional about this specific contact? Any special characters in the name?

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

No special characters in the name, address or phone number. I tried two different free contacts apps - neither one worked with the contact in question. Mixed results trying to create & sync a test contact.

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

I wonder if the name itself is a trigger for this behavior. I don't want you to reveal any personal information, but maybe you could tell us just the last name of the contact. Or alter the name slightly and see if it saves correctly.

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

Since the name started with a "V", I created a new contact on my iPad called "Vtest" with a dummy phone number and it synced with my Razr just fine. Then I changed the phone number on the iPad, and the change came through on the Razr. Then I added the address of the problem contact on the Razr, and it synced OK with my other devices. Then I changed the Vtest phone number to the problem contact number on the iPad, and the contact disappeared from the Razr. I think it may have something to do with the fact that Google contacts adds a country code (+1 for USA) to the phone number. When the Vtest phone number was in the format (NNN) NNN-NNNN on the Google Contacts web page, it synced with the Razr People app. When it changed to the +1NNNNNNNNNN format on the Google contacts web page, the contact disappeared from the Razr.

I could not see a way to remove the country code on the Google Contacts web page. All my other Google Contact phone numbers are in the format +1NNNNNNNNNN and I am afraid to modify them for fear of deleting them from my phone.

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

Open your Phone app, tap Menu>Settings>Call Settings, and see if there's a Home Dialing option. Check the Home Dialing settings for an option to use your country code or not. See what happens if you turn that off.

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

There is no Home Dialing option under my Call Settings. The only item that deals with country code is under Assisted Dialing where current country is listed as United States of America (this setting is grayed out and not changeable) and the Reference Country which is set to United States of America.

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

I'm moving this to the Droid Razr forum, because it's not quite right for the Android Apps forum (which is used more for developers who want to promote their apps, and therefore doesn't count towards your post count).

I'm also afraid that I'm pretty much stumped.:-\ The only other thing I can think of is to change your contact number in your Google Contacts (on the web browser) to 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx format, and see if that makes any difference (so that the phone doesn't try to modify it when syncing).

Re: Android People app deleting a Google contact

I have tried using different phone number formats: (NNN) NNN-NNNN, +1NNNNNNNNNN and NNN-NNN-NNNN on the different devices and the Google Contacts web page, but I haven't been able to reach a conclusion about the source of the problem. It still seems like the phone number format has something to do with this problem.
