My phone is stock and has the full 4.4.4 VZW bloatware on it.
I just turned OFF every app I don't use.
I leave Sync turned OFF
GPS is on High Accuracy and always ON.
MacroDroid turns off the internet when the screen locks. (WiFi and Data)
MacroDroid turns on the interent when the screen Unlocks.
IF the phone is idle and never used, it sips the battery at about 8 percent per day. That is a lot of days to be on Standby just waiting for a call.
Normal use for me though is the usual email stuff about 3 or 4 times a day.
Reading worldnews via the usual outlets, CNN, BBC, Fox, USAtoday, etc...
Baker's Dozen phone calls.
10 to 20 SMS messages and usually 2 or 3 full size pix sent via MMS.
A typical battery stat for me, is about 25% use per 24 hours....
here is my screenshot. If you look closely, you can see when the phone is idle. The battery discharge line is FLAT lined. Likewise, you can see when the screen is unlocked and the internet is turned on again. The typical downhill discharge graph with use.
then the screen is locked when I am done with it, and the discharge line Flatlines again until the next time the phone is in use.
there is a LOT to be said for controlling access to the internet. If the phone is idle, it is pointless to be wasting battery power.
