Why is my charging so slow on my HTC One M8?

Slow Charging on HTC One M8

My Verizon HTC One M8 is on Android 5.0.1, using the original factory wall charger.
I have recently been getting the "Slow Charging" message below and it doesn't seem to make a difference when I change charging cords. I have to plug it in, get the message, replug it back it for several times before it finally doesn't give me the message. Phone is about a year old and in perfect shape and holds charge pretty good.
Message is: "The connected charger will take longer to charge your phone. To charge faster, use the charger and cable that were provided with this phone."

I have used the original cable as well as a high quality gold plated Anker short cable with similar results. The only thing that could possibly be happening is the female end in my phone might be going bad, but I would be surprised due the age and the amount of care the phone has had.
Could this be lollipop doing some mischief and is there a fix on the horizon? The issue began popping up a few weeks after OS update to 5.0.1
BTW, phone is locked and in Verizon factory condition.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

I'd suspect the charging port before I'd suspect the update. If any of the contacts is a bit oxidized, or if there's any firt in there, you could have a problem getting a normal charge. Replugging a few times will cut through oxidation and can move a microscopic piece of dirt around.

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

I had the exact same problem... It turned out to be the charger itself. Ordered a oem charger/cable pack off amazon and it fixed the problem.

Respectfully both answers are wrong and the reason is explained in my original posting.
I already mentioned I was having this "slow charging" message even though I had inserted/reinserted for the last few weeks.
I also already mentioned that it doesn't happen all the time; every few tries it succeeds charging at fast speed. A faulty power adapter would be faulty all the time and not function differently after multiple tries of insertion. In fact I get the same message in the car (car charger) trying different cables.
Good try both of you and thanks for taking the time to help, but I hope I continue getting more responses (hoping responders read the original issue more carefully)

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

I've never heard of charging issues being connected to a software problem. The only possible reason I can think of for that is if you've got a rouge app chewing up the processor in the background, but I doubt it since you said it holds the charge good once full. So it's almost certainly a hardware issue. If you've tried different chargers and a new cable (not simply a different one you've already had laying around), then about the only other thing I can think of is the charging port or internal connections in the phone.

Have you tried plugging the phone into a computer and noticed any issues with the computer recognizing it? Often times when the charging starts getting iffy, so will computer connections and vice versa. It could be the computer doesn't even recognize anything was plugged in, doesn't recognize the device type, the HTC Connection Manager won't see the phone, etc. If you're seeing this kind of issue too, then I think that rules out this being software related.

My phone's port went out within a year, and the certified used one they sent under warranty roulette may have a loose one too. I'm beginning to wonder if it's a design flaw with how the USB port is installed, making it weak.

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

I'm having this issue. My computer won't recognize my m8 getting plugged in and every charger I plug it into says show charging. My carrier told me to factory reset and it worked, but after my settings were restored from cloud back up, it returned.

I made an account just for this thread. The charging ports on these phones are terrible. I'm pretty sure that's all there is to it. I'm stuck until April, but I absolutely need to get rid of this piece of trash. I've tried everything.

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

My phone was under warranty so I got it sent out by my carrier and got it back just a couple days ago. Repair invoice said they had to replace the main board. Seems to back to normal.

Just need it to work one more year and I can upgrade anyway :)

I was having exactly the same fault. Limited or no connection to my PC and slow charging with genuine charger. Powered M8 off and carefully used a sewing needle to pick a years worth of compacted fluff out of the micro USB socket on the phone. Hold the phone so the fluff drops straight down and out while your doing it. Make sure you go all the way around the terminal strip in the socket. The micro USB plug now goes noticeably further into the socket and my problems are cured! Its worth a try for free.

A needle or anything else metal is highly ill advised for cleaning a USB port. Especially because you can't remove the battery on the M8, leading to a risk of shorting it. You're better off using a tooth pick or canned air to clean it.

Hi, did you find a resolution?

Was it the main board going bad like a previous poster mentioned was the issue, lint in the charging port, etc.?
I'm having this issue as well and already cleaned the charging port to no avail.

I wouldn't use canned air either. The pressure from the air blast can ruin the delicate microphones and speakers on phones. I did it once on a Nokia and bricked it. Nobody I called could understand what I was saying the mic was so badly trashed.

I'll admit, that's a first. I know if you don't clear the line first and get the actual liquid blown into the port, it could cause issues. Never heard of it damaging a Mic before.

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

I suspect update, my phone was good until the last update, then started giving the message about using the oem charger, which i was.

Then also times where i would plug it in and it would not charge though the light was on.

Just now it said phone is unable to charge because it is using too much power though i have no apps, nothing running and had just restarted (because i read people saying it might charge if off) this was with battery at 26%. i came back and it was at 23%.

I really like this phone but all this weird charging stuff started after the last update.

Like the OP phone is in good condition, using original charger, about a year old. Super annoyed wish there would be a fix. Now Im afraid the phone wont turn on next time i check it out :(

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

Have you tried a different USB cable? They are pretty fragile, and a small issue on am internal connection can change the signal enough to mess up your charging. When I've had charging issues, it's almost always been the cable.

Re: Slow Charging on HTC One M8

update - i had the phone replaced using insurance, my chargers all work fine so i guess my problem was the power jack was screwed up.

Don't know how old this post is or if you'll ever read this but I'd have tried to help by giving you my experience with the same issue but after reading your response to the first two people who have tried to help you I'm not going to bother. What an arrogant and rude person you are, I'd like to say that you probably don't need a charged up phone as with that attitude you'll not have many friends to talk to.

Getting back to the issue - I had exactly the same symptoms, trying different chargers and cables. Actually, solution is very straightforward and was mentioned couple of times here. Just take a toothpick and take out the fluff in the charging socket. I was amazed how much of it had got there. Charging now without the message :)

I was having the charging problem then did a reset and cleared the cache. Before I did that the battery showed 75% charged. After the reset and reboot the battery showed 90%. I have no idea how that reset and cache wipe would have affected that. So far, I'm not getting the slow charging or no charging on any of my cables.
