Why is my Epic slow?

So I've been running an Epic since early November and I've always been pretty happy with it (particuliarly compared the Moment I replaced), but yesterday my wife upgraded to one and WOW is it faster then mine.

Using the same WiFi network, she can open the android market it a matter of 2-3 seconds where my phone it can take upwards of 2 MINUTES!

Now, here phone is basically stock and we've installed very few apps over what comes on the phone (nook, ipfob, upgraded the stock apps).

Mine, on the other hand, has been running DK28 since it came out. I also use LauncherProPlus instead of touchwiz and I've recently rooted (but I have yet to install a custom kernel).

Is it because I have too many apps installed? Is it something about LauncherPro, DK28? The other apps I've "upgraded" now that I'm on 2.2 (gmail, voice search, google search, maps, etc.)?

Any thoughts?

My reaction is that I've got too much installed (~100 apps in total) with only about 70 MB of free installation space.

I would love it if my phone could run like her's.

I realize I would get some benefit from ext4, but I'm not looking for that right now.... obviously something is slowing my phone down... I want to know what I did wrong.

Is there is no immediate thoughts, is there any suggestions on some kinda of diagnostics tool to give me an idea?

Thanks.

installing apps and taking up space wouldnt slow your phone down. Its not using up ram. I would guess its because u have DK28 installed, which is not official and your running things the phone wasnt optimized to run on (like getting rid of touch wiz). I would just do a factory restore. u would loose 2.2, but i think the speed difference would be worth it.

To be clear, a factory reset/restore will not revert your phone from Froyo to Eclair. You will need Odin for that.

I'm not sure why your system is abnormally slow, but since you're rooted and are on Froyo why not flash a non-EXT4 ROM? Re-flashing your system may eliminate whatever the problem is, and the custom ROM will give you a speed increase on top of that.

Actually, having too many apps installed may be JUST the reason your phone is slow. Unfortunately- too many apps have background running services ie: Tango and Qik Voicemail both run in the background constantly- I removed Tango as I rarely used it and now that I'm rooted I didn't put Qik back on (another junk app). I highly recommend EXT4 now that you are rooted.

Its a samsung product, they never work well when you've had it for a while.

Samsung always has problematic phones

Don't forget doing things like keeping cache cleared in apps. Like the market. And also deleting old browser cache too. You'll be surprised how quickly that stuff will accumulate.

I also have my text messaging app save no more than 100 messages per contact.

Taking little measures as these will keep your phone running snappy.

I will tell you that ever since I downloaded Vignette and Launcher Pro (same day) I have been experiencing a much slower device. Not painfully slow, but slower nonetheless.

The one thing we have in common is Launcher Pro. So.... maybe? I would have to run some tests on mine just to make sure.

I just removed launcher pro because my phone became very laggy. It seems much better now.

It's surprising that you think LPP is the problem, as I found a significant speed gain from using it. You could give Zeam a try. It's super lightweight, and while it lacks somewhat in the features department, imo its the fastest launcher on the market.

Have you played with any of the advanced settings with memory configuration? There are a lot of things to play with in LPP to make it run a whole lot smoother.

I have over a 100 3rd party apps with 220mbs left of internal memory with 7 screens on LP on Eclair 2.1, and the only thing that I have done is a simple permanent root, my Epic is very quick!!

I've noticed just running Launcher Pro Plus stock without changing any of the settings, I'll get an occasional hang or a lag going back to the homescreen or waiting for the task switcher to open up. I'm running rooted DK28 with Ext4, 370mb+ of free space, and apps run great, but Launcher Pro seems to just... be lazy.

I just haven't been able to find the right combination of settings that make it just plain snappy.

LauncherPro is instant for me. Seems hard on the battery though. Unless I'm just using it more than I realize.

Personally, I'm not ready to blame LauncherPro Plus, yet. I switched to it because it felt so much faster then the stock launcher. I only mentioned it in my first post because I wanted to make sure I pointed out the differences between my phone, and my wife's.

I will say that the suggestion to clear the cache on the android market and browser did make a big difference. I don't think those were the only issues, but it clearly that was contributing.

The fact that several other people are complaining of lags with LPP is interesting. Definately not ready to switch to TouchWiz (yuck), but I'll keep it in mind.

So far, an intersting thread.

Try these settings, as the defaults have a slower setting - the settings below make my LP fly! Especially opening and closing of the app drawer - it's instant!! :-)

From your Home screen, Select menu: -> preferences -> advanced settings -> minimum scrolling speeds = 100 -> app drawer opening speed = 10 -> screen previews opening speed = 10

Whenever you do "anything" from simple switching of apps to scrolling in your diifferent screens or whatever, you "are" using LP. How else would you get around?

Yeah, having them set to instant basically turns off all the fancy animations. Everything just snaps to. Saves you a hit on performance.

LMAO :D

Did anyone even try the usual old remedy for a lot of issues? Do a reboot? I know it sounds stupid but before I started rooting and all, things would get slow or start hanging up and the old reboot would resolve things again for another day or two...

This carries over from my Blackberry days... Things got messed up, reboot.. Phones like to reboot every now and then just like your computer.

With DK28 Wifi frequently hangs on me... ie it won't enable. The only solution I've found is to reboot... so It's rare that I go a whole day without a reboot.
