AC Question

Mp3s and m4as often store the track number of a song directly in the song title. However, the phone should be able to interpret this and remove the track number when displaying song names.

My phone initially did this, but now it is showing track numbers before song titles. How do I fix this?

Welcome to Android Central! Which music app, the stock one? Most music apps will use the embedded ID3 tags for the track title, and this field typically doesn't include the track number. But some music apps may have an option to play music based on your folder structure, in which case it might display the music track's actual filename (not the ID3 tag). Do the song titles look like the actual filenames? You might be able to tell just by looking, since filenames don't include certain symbols, and they can only be a certain length.

Hey B. Diddy. I wrote the question as a guest but was unable to reply so I made an account. Thanks for the Welcome! Google play music is the only muaic player that currently displays the song names correctly. I have been using Pi Music Player. It displayed names correctly always until it all of a sudeen switched yesterday. Testing multiple other players yielded the same results. Could the phone have have wiped the ID3 name tag, or perhaps lost the ability to interpret ID3 tags? A fix would be appreciated!

Try changing the filename of one of the music tracks (e.g., add the word "TEST" to the beginning of the filename) and then play it using Pi. Does the word "TEST" show up in Pi as well?

You're using the latest version, right? It looks like the current version is 2.4.8, updated July 22.

It also looks like there's a "Folder View" option -- are you in that mode?

I too faced this annoying issue. I did some hit n try, understood the root cause and cracked it as under:

1. See the song file in pc. If it shows a title attribute it will override the file name in music player. For Example - if the file name of the song is "Another day in paradise" but its Title attribute is "Track 9" then in music player (even in Google Play music) it will show as "Track 9".

2. Delete the song file from mobile folder after copying it in pc. If it is already in pc, then straightway delete it from mobile. Right click the file in pc and select properties. Go to Details. Click "Remove Properties and Personal Information" tag placed at bottom. On the new popped up window click "Remove the following properties from from this file" radio button. Click "Title" check box. Click "OK". Click again "OK" in properties window. This title attribute is now gone.

3. Copy this song file in mobile. Now the song file name will display and will be played according to its alphabetical order of the folder.

It's bit time consuming but one time effort. It solved my problem, hence shared. I don't know if there is any other cut short method.
