AC Question

I can gwet the map to face north or face 'actual direction that phone is pointing' in walking mode but whenever I try to make the switch away from facing north, it will always revert to facing north in driving mode. This is obviously dangerous when navigating somewhere using your phone as a GPS. even when the red/white compass appears, it manually change the direction and then it simply rotates back to north on it's own immediately. I've tried swithcing off 'map always facing north' in navigation settings. I've tried tapping the location circle at the bottom left to get the map to face the direction of the phone (in the bottom right corner), that works... until you then tap 'start navigation'. I bought the phone 3 days ago - it's an asus zenfone 3 max - the problem started right away. I performed a factory reset and this fixed the issue, for around 24 hours, now it's back again. restarting doesn't fix it. disabling and re-enabling google maps doesn't fix it. Any ideas at all? Google haven't responded to my query. I'm at a loss.

Most people prefer north-up maps, so that may be set as the default in the latest version. (I don't automatically update.) You get used to that when using paper maps - turning them means that you have to read street names sideways or upside down, so you learn (at about the age of 8 or 9) to use maps with north at the top.

(Version 9.60.0 appears to do the same thing. I never noticed it because I'm used to using the map north-up.)

thanks Rukbat. using google navigation whilst driving with the map facing north the whole time is dangerous. Google navigation for driving has always operated like a tomtom/gps device to show the map ahead as if you are looking at it. This was the case with my phone for the first 24 hours of use. Then gmaps would no longer allow me to engage the 'tomtom' navigation mode. I performed a factory reset, which solved the issue. Then 24 hours later the issue returned. Is anyone else experiencing this bug? I am using a Zenfone 3 max

Sorry that should have read: "Google navigation for driving has always operated like a tomtom/gps device to show the map ahead as if you are looking at the terrain from the front window of the car"

Did you manage to find a solution that works? I have the same issue on my Moto G5 Plus. If I uninstall all updates for Google Maps, it works for me. But the problem is that the updates get reapplied soon and stops working again. This has something to do with the newer versions of the Maps app.

Open Google Maps>Settings>Navigation Settings>Turn off Keep North Up
