Maybe. Indeed not being able to receive calls in safe mode is not good. I'll learn to live with the dark screen.

Safe mode should receive calls , strange !No, not yet. I never know when our son calls, different times every Sunday. Will put in safe mode now and see what happens.....
It is relevant to my phone. The Samsung Galaxy I had, would go dark when phone at ear, but as soon as you looked at it, it would come back on. I currently have the LH V40 thinq and it doesn' come back on. I have it on speaker, so hubby can hear and talk as well, and it doesn' stay on, screen goes dark.
Well..., when in safe mode I couldn't receive a call I was waiting for.... So I have turned safe mode off. I'll manage with the dark screen, not a huge problem. Several icons went gray, including the 'phone' icon.
Moto also had a similar feature on the Moto X.OK, it sounds like your phone doesn't have that feature. I know Samsung flagships do.
Edit: After digging and doing some research on your V40, asking for a number of different search terms, I couldn't find any mentions of a Screen Stay-type feature on LG phones, so that looks like what we're looking at (pardon the pun.) according to one search, with screenshot, Smart Stay is a feature unique to flagship Samsung phones and tablets, because it sounds like you normally look at your phone when on speaker, so that's what it appears to be. Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news.

This definitely should not happen. You're using the stock Phone app, and expecting the call over your normal wireless carrier, correct? Not a call over a different platform, like Skype?
Does the screen turning off seem to happen at when the normal screen timeout would happen?
Testing with my LG V30:
- speaker phone will dim the screen but keep it active after about 10 seconds.
- ear-mode will stay fully lit until a screen timeout turns off the screen.
