Why is my Phone not displaying the system update option in settings>about??

I recently got a HTC one m8 and i was thinking of updating it.But when i go to Settings>about>.. there is no option for checking or installing updates. Whats the problem and how can i fix it?

Was this a phone that you purchased new from a carrier or from an individual?

Maybe you have separate vendor app installed on your phone which handles os/apps updates.

Maybe but most Android phones build it into settings as well. The phone may also be rooted.
