Why is my S5 so laggy/sluggish when compared to my friend's new iPhone 6 Plus and old iPad 2?

Certainly a lot of biased comments here. Lol. Iphone is garbage? I guess this is android central.

I never noticed how laggy my S5 was until I used it side-by-side with the new iPhone 6 Plus. (opening the same apps, including identical Google apps at the same time)

never really paid any attention to this forum until now because my S5 has been running fine, until now....

searched the word "lag" in the S5 forum and I got more than 500 threads complaining of lag....
yet there are also a lot of people saying they have no lag.... this probably means there is a
serious quality control issue at the Samsung factory?

I just think it's funny when people call the iphone garbage when it's a well made device. Both phones have their uses. Iphones tend to be more smooth and problem free. Android has more freedom. Each has something for someone.

Android users make the mistake of thinking that only people who are ill-informed about technology, or who simply don't care about all of a phone's abilities, would be "foolish" enough to buy an iPhone. A lot of them look at a spec sheet, assume that the iPhone is inferior, and that the people who buy it must not realize it. What many of them fail to understand is that it's not about the spec list; it's about the experience. (Why do you need 3GB of RAM if 1GB can do the same job? Does that make a phone "inferior"?)

It stems from a lack of security in their own purchasing decision. They see that the iPhone is the biggest selling brand in the U.S, but they want to justify going "against the tide".

Just for the record, I'm an Android user. I have a Moto X. But I didn't pass over the iPhone because it "sucks"; it just didn't have the feature set I wanted. If it ever did get the things I wanted, I would give it consideration, because there are many things that iPhones simply do better than Android devices.

My S5 lags but I'm not sure if it's touchwiz or aviate
I love the launcher, but I think it's causing the lag

What do u mean by "lag" is not lag. Lag is when your phone starts to freeze out like an ice cube. I assume that "lag" mean slower. I admit that Iphone 6 is a slightly faster phone (not much) and thats because their OS is smooth and doesnt require a power giant like the android devices have. I have been using the s5 and its fast enough for me and its lag free (use it since launch day).

I wouldn't say the S5 lags as much as there is a noticeable input delay. This can be caused by a number of things but from my experience the S5 suffers with this delay partially due to the touchscreen latency and the actual heaviness of the Touchwiz overlay.

The iPhone and HTC One M8 have touchscreens with lower touch latency than the S5, in other words, this is basically the time it takes from when you touch the screen until the phone's screen realizes you touched it and initiates the corresponding action. If this was solely the issue, it would be barely noticeable as we are talking milliseconds but once you couple this with Touchwiz, the delay becomes more pronounced.

In reality it's all about picking your battles, Apple chooses to perfect the UI and user experience and as a result invests extensively in optimization and touchscreen technology, the fact the iPhone is an in house product of Apple greatly helps them achieve the synchronization between the hardware and software.

Samsung on the other hand focuses on features and specs, it's no surprise that Galaxy devices are more feature rich than iPhones, more features typically require more resources. Frankly Samsung doesn't try to deal with the source of the issue but frankly just throws "horsepower" at the problem. This can only work for so long and eventually you have to deal with the issue. A bit of software optimization and debloating would go a long
way in the user experience of Samsung devices.

My s5 doesn't even compare to my 2 year old iPhone 5 in fluidity and smoothness which is sad. I don't understand why people like to say the iPhones are under spec'd and laugh at them when they run smoother and they stay running smoother for much longer than any quad core 2gb of ram android phone I've had. Closest experience I would say was my nexus 4 which to this day is still smoother than my s5 but not quiet iOS smooth.

No lags here I was surprised about that, because I had galaxy S (totally different story) and all I can say Samsung has done a great job since then. I think it's very much connected to user preferences... Check the power saving mode there is an option to limit CPU.

As far as I'm concerned, my S5 does not lag. Yes, the most recent models of the Iphone open apps faster. But am I gonna fret about a few milliseconds? OMG can I can open the gallery of the iphone a split second faster then on my S5!...If that matters to some well so be it. But i still wouldn't trade the things that matter most to me that I can do on my S5 over what is not possible on the iphone.

No, the lag I get is seconds
That is way too much
If I'm swiping pages, it should NOT take like 5 seconds to load
Now again, I'm not sure if that's my launcher, aviate or touchwiz

I have a Note 3 and an S4. I have to say the S4 is a bit laggy but only when playing certain games. The Note 3 works beautifully and plays graphically heavy games very nicely.

I have been using Samsung phones for the last 3 or 4 years. I've had several of them, including S2, S3, Note II, and Note 3. They were all excellent phones.

I have zero experience with the iPhones, until today. My friend managed to get his paws on a spanking new iPhone 6 Plus. The first thing that I noticed was how smooth and fast everything was running. It's almost like day and night. I thought maybe it was just a new phone having very few apps installed. However, my friend has already had all of his previously-purchased apps installed... all 127 of them. In fact, his 64GB iPhone 6 Plus only had 590mb of storage space remaining. I kept comparing the same apps running on my S5 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Even Google apps seem to run much smoother on t
he iPhone.

I decided to restore my 3-month-old S5 just in case there's something wrong with it. While it was restoring, I tried my friend's 2-year-old iPad 2. Oh wow.... I was again surprised by how fast and smooth it ran, compared to my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1(2014).

After my S5 finished restoring, I compared it to the iPhone 6 Plus again... no.. the iPhone 6 was still faster and smoother. Come to think of it, I don't think it was necessarily "faster" but the experience made everything seem to flow faster and in a velvety way.

I didn't think I would admit this, but I was genuinely jealous of my friend's iPhone 6 Plus. Well... almost... I absolutely cannot stand the fact that it doesn't have SD card slot and user-replaceable battery(both features are why I've stuck with Samsung phones for so long) It was also not nice when I couldn't install launchers to customize the homescreen to just how I like it.

Oh well...... :(

iOS was always "Buttery smooth" compared to Android with TouchWiz on top no argument about that. But TouchWiz is improving over the time. For me it's ok to sacrifice the "faster/smoother" aspect of the phone. For the both of us what really matters is battery life is better, battery is removable, expandable storage, customizability. For me that is VERY WORTH IT.

I have the original Galaxy S, and yes, that phone was slow.
but, when you got rid of the stuff you didn't need, it did pretty good for its' generation.

My current S5 is not slow at all and I can only surmize that those who complain of slowness have too much crap going on in the background.

I have everything turned off except for Location. I open the apps I want to use and then I close them. They all respond quickly, some faster than others depending on the kind of app they are. News apps are slow because they always have to pull their data from a server.

I don't play games, I have all animations turned off, I like the flat look so 3D is turned off.
My screens jump to where I want to go.

My phone is doing an excellent job and I'm quite satisfied with it.

Never used an iPhone.... I abandoned Steve Jobs & Company back in 1988 when I got tired of them always stealing money out of my wallet. Never went back again, and never will.

I'm pretty sure they are referring to 1 second delay/lag. I get it here and there, but not always.

I know what you mean. It's the software, not the hardware.

Ya I know. Its still funny when people freak out like omg did u see the iPhone 6 only 1gb of ram! And a crappy 1080p screen and omg an 8mp camera What were they thinking!!?? It doesn't even compare to my 2 year old android!! I see that all the time on this forum and it makes me laugh.

When I first got the Samsung Galaxy S3 it came preloaded with Android 4.1.1. It was not laggy at all. When I upgraded to 4.1.2, it became intolerably laggy and I could not revert back to 4.1.1 since I had not made a back up. I then dumped Android for a custom ROM for not making sure that the 4.1.2 upgrade was also optimized for my phone. To suggest that Apple products are inherently faster than Android devices over the course of their lives is in accurate. As new upgrades begin to be available for Apple products, they also lag. In fact, Apple is well known for slowing down the performance of their older products when you upgrade. If you root your Android device there are plenty of guides out there on how to get rid of or disable bloatware and optimize your phone.
