S5 with Lollipop barely charging

Changed from kitkat to lollipop and now the phone won't charge. Same cables, same plugs, same USB ports.

Just won't charge. Any ideas?

Re: S5 with Lollipop barely charging

1) Keep the phone turned off while charging.

2) The phone is running like crazy (check Android System and Android OS) after an update (especially if you didn't do at least a cache wipe).

3) The amount of charge the battery gets is th amount of current the phone draws from the charger (which is still the same) minus the amount of current the phone is using (which is probably exceptionally high right now), so there's no current going into the battery. Everything coming from the charger is being used by the phone. If the phone is off, all the current goes to the battery.

(Or just add one more bug to Lollipop - there are so many that one more won't matter.)

Yes, anytime an update is applied, a lot of changes are occurring on the phone.

Lots of apps need to be upgraded, and if you have PlayStore set to AutoUpdate what you are experiencing is normal.

goto PlayStore and turn off AutoUpdates...

As Rukbat suggested, turn the phone off and fully charge the battery, then see if the OS handles itself in good fashion before allowing anything else to update.

I never leave AutoUpdates turned ON. I only allow an update to an app that is misbehaving.
If it ain't broke, don't be fixing it until it is broke.

I have this problem when I'm charging from my work PC or Xbox One. Was perfectly fine before the update from KitKat to Lollipop 5.0. Shutting the phone down is impractical and doesn't work as I just see an orange triangle and it still doesn't charge. The phone still charges ok on the mains charger and battery life isn't bad. I've restarted it many times since the Lollipop install.

Is there a workaround, such as a Lollipop feature that can be turned off on the phone to make charging work ?

I actually got to the bottom of this. It depends on the cable you use.

Some USB cables have pins 2&3 shorted, others don't. If they are not shorted the maximum draw will be 500mA, if they are shorted 2A.
Charging back to kitkat levels now (ironically with a HTC cable and not a Samsung one)

That's interesting David, cheers. The problem is, if your ordering cables online, how do you tell if pins 2 and 3 are shorted? Anyone know?
