text messaging is so so slow

I have a samsung galaxy s5 running android 5.0. Text messaging so super slow. I am using swiftkeys app for texting. I just realized that it is only 1 contact that is super slow. The others are slow too but not anywhere near as bad as the 1 contact. it turns out that the contact has almost 12K messages. I wonder if the size makes a difference. I decided to delete the messages using the garbage can button and then selecting all the messages. This causes my phone to freeze and I need to restart the phone to get it back to being responsive.

Is there a way to access the file and just delete the messages?

Is there another way to get rid of the messages.

All of this is assuming that the number of text messages is the cause of the issue.

Is anyone able to help me deal with this most annoying issue?
Thanks!!

Re: text messaging is so so slow

Welcome to Android Central! I think that amount of saved messages can bog things down. Try going to the App Manager, select Messaging, and see how much Data is reported. If it's a lot, then Clear Cache/Clear Data. See if that clears out all of the messages.

I am suddenly having the same issue.
Deleted a ton of messages, cleared cache and data. turned off auto update on apps.
It freezes when typing, if someone is sending a message I am stuck until the message arrives then the screen doesn't want to go back to see the message.

Re: text messaging is so so slow

I use Textra ...way faster than the stock Samsung app.

I've also noticed that Swiftkey is a laggy pos on my S5.
It's not the case on my N7.

No big deal, the stock Sammy keyboard is really excellent

Had this problem too. Had turned off deleting old texts and had all the same symptoms. Finally went in and changed settings to only keep last 1000 and after restart started working normal again...
