Why is new S5 so laggy?

Hi all,

I was recently posted abroad by work and received a new Galaxy S5 for the duration of my stay. I was excited to finally experience Android but my impressions so far have been less than stellar.

I'm coming from an iPhone 6 and compared to that the S5 is very slow and laggy. Applications such as Chrome, Twitter, Facebook are taking up to 3 seconds to open where the screen just freezes. Scrolling in Google Maps isn't smooth, instead the picture moves in small increments. It's not unbearable, but nor is it a smooth and enjoyable experience. And it also seems really odd that Google Maps should work better on an iPhone than on an Android.....

I've deleted all the bloatware than came with it, disabled all the apps I can't delete yet don't use. I'm updated to the latest version of Lollipop....

In the last few days I've actually started to just use it as a personal hotspot so I can use my iPhone 6 here without roaming charges which is a pretty stinging indictment of the S5, but I honestly can't be bothered to use it for everyday use in given its current performance :(

Have I just been given a fault S5 or is this the norm?

I'm a long time Android user who loves it in general, but is not extremely pleased with Lollipop. The iPhone 6 is wicked fast, I'll give it that, the S5 with Lollipop 5.0 is just not as fast as the iPhone 6. This iteration of Lollipop has some odd memory leaks that make certain tasks a bit slow. Chrome being one of those tasks that seems to leak memory the most, therefore causing Lollipop to close it out of RAM more aggressively than necessary.

The best suggestions are to enable developer options and change the animation scales to 0.5x, change network settings to the appropriate GSM or LTE / CDMA from Global. Another thing Android imo has never handled very well is huge amounts of SMS and MMS messages (why, I don't know). If you transferred all of your texts and MMS, you might consider paring them down (Hangouts is an option as well, it seems to care less how many messages you have, though you lose the default Messenger's pop-ups).

The maps issue you're having sounds like you have a defective touchscreen, or perhaps interference from a screen protector or something? My maps is always essentially instantaneous. I'm assuming you have the apps updated and such? I'm at a loss on that one.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the 5.1.1 Lollipop update, as the update from 5.0 to 5.1 made my mom's old nexus 7 usable again. I think it will make the S5 very fast yet again. Either way, hopefully you figure out some endearing features of the phone and Android (like long holding the wifi / Bluetooth toggle in the customizable quick settings actually opens their real settings menu -- and I love the little buzz my phone gives when I have a missed notification -- and the scrolling homescreens with widgets). But if it's not for you, then it's not for you. Kinda like iOS is just not for me (even if it is faster in many cases). Choice is good, and hopefully you get to choose what is most pleasurable to you, and at least not be completely annoyed with your work phone in the end :-)
