Why is nexus 7 recording so choppy?

I just purchased a nexus 7 today and when I got it home I noticed that the playback was very choppy in the audio that I recorded. I believe that I am running jelly bean version 4.2.2. I am wondering if this is a problem with the software or if its a problem with a tablet and I need to return it.

Welcome to Android Central! What were you using to record audio? 4.2.2 is an old version of Android--the Nexus 7 should be up to 4.4.4 now. Go to Settings>About Tablet>System Updates, and tap Check for Updates. Make sure the system is completely up to date before considering a return.

First, try it again to make sure you can reproduce the problem.
Then start turning off other apps. I'm wondering if some other app is intermittently hogging resources.
Do you have spare memory?
