Why is the photo app not engaging with my camera?

[Android Central Question]

I have a Moto g7 play which performed a background system update yesterday. Now my camera no longer provides options to edit, save or otherwise engage with the photo just taken. Also, the photos that were already in a photo album are showing up as there, but are blank.
