Why is there a constant time countdown before I can enter my pattern for lock screen?

I updated the software on my phone (Galaxy S7) last night before I fell asleep. It was taking a while so I fell asleep before I entered the pattern to unlock my phone after restarting. This morning (admittedly my child did have my phone for a bit and cannot unlock it) first thing, it was locked and told me I needed to wait 15 minutes to try to unlock it again. I waited. Last I saw it was on 2 minutes, then went back a few minutes later and it was up to 50 minutes. Frustrated. Restarted the phone. I can access the phone as long as it doesn't lock. The same countdown will occur as soon as my screen locks. I cannot use the settings feature to enter my security pattern to make any changes as it gives me the same countdown. I have restarted twice with the same results.
