Odin is by far the greatest thing I've ever seen or heard and definitely glad to have it for the Epic. Just imagine the ability to flash all the roms and modems and themes and mods all you want and never have to fear about bricking your phone and ending up with a very expensive but pretty looking paperweight. That is what Odin offers you. It offers you the ability to return to the stock rom that the carriers and manufactures want you to have. Call it a clean slate if you will, a @$#&@*! preventer, and all around your best friend in the tinkering/hacking business. And with Odin's other friends, one click root, my backup, and titanium backup you can save your precious apps and all the data that comes with them. Which is great cause who really wants to start completely over in Angry Birds each time you flash a different rom that requires you to wipe!!

Here's an example of some of the stuff I've been doing:

With the release of so many Froyo leaks lately I decided that I wanted to test some of them out. Having already rooted my device I decided to install Titanium Pro to my device and back up all my apps along with some browser bookmarks and wifi settings. After that it was flash away!!! First I started off trying ACS 2.1 rom and boy did I love it. Plus restoring my apps was a breeze with titanium pro so in less than 20 minutes I had my phone back to where I wanted it. (might be longer if you have different ringtones for different contacts. I only have a ringtone for phone, notifications, and gmail. Not sure how to backup all those ringtones for different contacts).

Then the froyo leaks came and boy i was tempted but not sure if I wanted to risk it. That is when i came across ODIN in the forums. So i used that to restore my Epic back to stock after wiping with clockwork recovery. (good practice to always do before doing anything with your phone in regards to flashing roms and restoring back to stock) and then procedded to use Odin to get that Froyo goodness onto my device. (now you can use the flashable update.zip to get froyo without Odin) After that I rerooted using one click method (which works with Froyo too), downloaded titanuim and BAM back to where I wanted my phone to be.

Well after using the froyo leak for a while I wasn't likeing the bugs so I went back to the official 2.1 version of Android for the Epic using Odin, rerooted, and running ACS slim version in no time.

Best thing about all of this.... i'm no computer geek!!!! i know nothing of code or building a rom or any of that. That is what makes Odin and those one click methods so great. So feel free to dive right in, dig through these forums, read up on the dos and don'ts, and get involved in all this hooting and hollering and hacking business and truly make your Epic YOU.

Thanks for reading. Hope this helps.

EXTRA POINTERS THAT WILL SAVE YOU SOME TIME AND STRESS. I haven't done it in a long time now but it will save you time and steps if you do a nandroid backup of the rom you are loving if you ever plan on returning back to it. My advice is place it in a safe spot on your pc and rename to something other than the date so you will know what it exactly is when you go to use it. Also once it is on your pc delete it from your sd card. Those backups can take up a lot of valuable sd card space. Then when you need it again you know exactly what backup to use allowing you to place the correct nandroid backup onto your sd card and avoid those oh crap that isn't the backup i wanted to restore.

ALSO BE SURE YOU CHARGE YOUR BATTERY FULLY EACH AND EVERY TIME YOU GO TO FLASH A NEW ROM OR USE ODIN!!! Had an instance in which I thought I had enough juice to flash a rom when right in the middle of flashing it my battery died and I couldn't charge it with my phone. Luckily my wife has an Epic too so I used her fully charged battery to restore my phone through Odin and save myself from bricked device. SO CHARGE THAT BATTERY!!!!!

I think the most important part of what you said was at the end...

Have a well charged or full battery when preforming these any of these actions. You don't want to get caught in the middle of these things with a dead battery.

just wondering if this has helped anybody out yet?

Me :) Closest thing to Web Doctor for Palm. I must have re-flashed three or four times during the last week while messing around with ROMs and stuff. Im a little slow..

This whole flashing roms business makes so much more sense now.

I was afraid to flash a rom because redownloading all those apps is a b**** and i thought i would lose all my save states like angry birds.

OP: good job explaining.

BTW I came from a PRE, so this whole rom business seemed way harder then WEBOS QUICK ISNTALL.

Just an fyi for ya guys there is a sticky called rom handbook or something like that with step by step instructions. Very helpful. Check it out
