Why the 45W fast charger not supported?

thank you for your explanation.

looking up the 45-watt Samsung charger, it says:

"Super fast charging up to 45W with compatible devices"

"Super Fast Charging requires a USB PD 3.0 compatible device that supports Direct Charging. Devices that do not support USB PD3.0 standard or Direct Charging will charge at a slower rate than SFC speed."

https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/mobile-accessories/phones/45w-usb-c-fast-charging-wall-charger-black-ep-ta845xbegus/

Sadly, their technical specifications in terms of volts and amps are de minimis and they barely explain what PD 2.0 / 3.0 are.

on the Samsung press release of the S21 Ultra, they say:

"USB PD 3.0 (PPS) certified Fast Charging for wired charging (AFC and QC2.0 compatible)"

Do please note that there is a difference between AFC and AFC 2.0 apparently. I can't find the details yet, if anyone else knows, kindly please post. thanks.

i then found this article online and i don't understand much of it at all:

i'm thinking maybe it's best to just use the 25-watt charger and put one's mind at ease!

That's what i would do, and cancel the 45 watt one.

At the end of the day, it's fifty bucks you could use for something else.

I'm looking in device care , fast charging when I use the 25w stock charger on my Note 20U, so super fast charging probably be if I go 45w and up.Screenshot_20210119-164627_Device%20care.jpg

i'm concerned that if i futzed with my order, or any PORTION of my order (the order that includes the S21 Ultra), that it would cause delays. what do you think? it's all on one single order.

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding what chargers you can use for the S21 series.

Guys, if you have the Samsung 45W chargers or mistakenly bought it in advance, you can safely use it. It will however only charge at the maximum 25W, not 45W. But it's perfectly safe to use. If you have the older 18W fast charger like I have for the Note 9, again it's perfectly safe but it will charge only at 18W. Ditto for a Samsung 10W charger.

All these chargers are safe to use. You'll just get slower charging as per that particular charger. You cannot charge faster than 25W. The power delivery of the device (S21 phone) will not allow it.

This is interesting! Samsung is defiantly throttling the charging speed and it never comes close to 45 watts. I think Samsung is afraid of the amount of heat generated. They don't have a charging system like oneplus/Oppo where a lot fo the heat is transferred to the charger.

Hi, welcome to AC!

Here's an experiment I did when I got my S20 and compared the 15, 25 and 45W chargers. I didn't realize the phone wasn't compatible with the 45W speed when I made the vid, but the phone obviously is compatible with the charger and essentially charges at 25W

So when I get my S21 Ultra I bought 2 x 25W chargers. But we also have the 15 watt ones now. So will it actually say fast charging when using the 15W and the 25W will say super fast charging. I think Mustang posted above where his phone in the settings had fast charging super fast charging and fast wireless charging. So I guess when I use my 25 watt I'll see super fast charging on the screen.

It won't say "super fast charging" when using the 25W fast charger. It'll say as always,"fast charging". I don't know what it'll say when you plug in the 15W charger. But even if it says "fast charging" you know that it'll charge only at 15W.

For me personally, this is what stopped me upgrading to the S21 Ultra from my current Note 9. I very seriously considered it and really only because of that new dual periscope zoom lens with the brand new 10x optical zoom. It's a toy I would really love. But 99.99% of my phone usage is at home browsing the internet, YouTube, Netflix etc. For me, the only real advantage is better battery life. So I plug it in a few more times at home through the night. No big deal.

Ironically, as I had to buy a new charger because my Note 9 charger is only 18W, I may have upgraded if I had the option of the old 45W charger.

I really love the new features of the S21 series but Samsung really needs to keep up with the Chinese vendors with respect to fast wired and wireless charging. This single reason is why personally I didn't upgrade. Sure, the 25W charger will charge faster than the 18W charger of my Note 9. But not by much, so not worth it for me to buy. If the S21 Ultra charged a lot faster I would have bought it. The single most repetitive action I do is plug in my phone for charging. That is the most important feature for me to upgrade.

As an aside, my Note 9 battery is still holding charge really well because I have looked after it, rarely charging over 85% and never overnight charging.

You don't do wireless charging? I have a few of them around my house and just sit the phone on them at night and right now at my desk for instance. I used to have one in the kitchen as well. I never have a problem with battery life at home.

thanks for the comment/advice.

if the 45-watt charger is compatible with the S21 Ultra and will NOT cause problems, why wouldn't they show it properly on samsung.com? i went to their mobile accessories page and selected my new phone, the S21 Ultra, and selected power accessories, and it ONLY gave the 25-watt charger as the only option!

may i ask how we may be certain that the 45-watt charger would be properly recognized by the new S21 Ultra and it will tell the charger to NOT use its full 45-watts?
The phone controls the rate of charge, not the charger.

Oh ok thanks! I just watched the video of the comparisons so yes I'm glad I bought the 25W. Now I just bought the power bricks with no cord. Because I knew our phones came with the cable.

And I know this is a dumb question but does all USB x C cables work like if I have a couple longer cables will they work or does 25W chargers take special cables?

If I recall the cable needs to be compatible with PD to get 25watt fast charge otherwise will be slower. Most newer cables are good. Someone else may can explain better.

In some cases phone can alert you - maybe battery device care - of cable that is below spec. Also length matters.

EP-TA800 (came with my S20 Ultra)
Input: 100-240V, 50-60 Hz, 0.7 A
Output: PDO: 5.0V 3.0A or 9.0 V 2.77A
PPS: 3.3-5.9V 3.0A or 3.3-11.0V 2.25A
That's called a 25 Watt charger, but if the phone won't take 9 Volts, 5X3 is 15 Watts.
additionally, i have two others that have identical specifications but have DIFFERENT model numbers:

EP-TA20JWE and EP-TA200
Input: 100-240V, 50-60 Hz 0.5A
Output: 9.0V 1.67A or 5.0V 2.0A
That's a 15 Watt (at 9 Volts, it's 10 Watts at 5 Volts) charger.

Wonder which one(s) are best suited for the S21 Ultra without causing damage and yet takes best advantage of its fast charging capabilities?
As long as the phone and charger work, they'll negotiate a safe charge. (Only the voltage has to be negotiated - the charger then supplies as much current as the phone takes, as long as it can supply that much.)

For example, what if one would use the EP-TA200 or the EP-TA20JWE (identical specifications) on the S21 Ultra? would it still function fine and would the S21 Ultra be "happy" with it and the only issue is that charging would be slow?

Or, would the output be so low that the S21 Ultra would NOT be happy with it and it can thus cause problems?
No, that can't happen. You could charge it with an old 3.5 Watt charger (5 Volts at 0.7 Amps), and the battery would eventually reach 100%.

This thread is pretty interesting. I was thinking I'd just use the chargers I got with our S10 and S10+, but it looks like they are 15W chargers. They both say 9.0V and 1.67A, so 15W. Right? Will my new S21 charge faster with the 25W blocks?

Yes, that's a 15 Watt charger. And yes, your S21 will charge faster with a 25 Watt charger.

The 25w is much faster , I would go with that .
