News Why the Pixel 8's Face Unlock upgrade is a big deal

Yes I had read about it earlier it's secured to use banks and other payments options which is great, not sure if they are on both models or just the pro?

"And thanks to new machine learning advancements, Face Unlock on Pixel 8 now meets the strongest Android biometric class and can be used for banking app sign-in and payment apps like Google Wallet."

I wouldn't trust it til it's been hammered on by rubes for a couple of months.

And even then...

I may be misremembering, but wasn't there an issue with the Pixel 4 where face unlock still wouldn't work with a lot of banking/other apps because those apps would need to be updated by their developers to allow for that means? If that recollection is correct, I wonder if the device being 'capable' and 'deserving' of the ability may still be rendered moot by potential lack of urgency on part of some developers.

I didn't have any issues with my banks and it worked flawless like the iPhone face unlock

That was because most apps were still using the old fingerprint API instead of BiometricPrompt which is more sensor agnostic. It's been years, so the vast majority of apps have ditched the old API and are using BiometricPrompt now.

Hadn't known they had switched the authentication management in the software to make it easier on developers. That's comforting, and has me more hopeful. I've actually had a generally good experience with the FPS on my P7 Pro, but could definitely see facial authentication being a nice QoL change.
