Why the sudden shift from the 5x to 6p

Yeah the 5x is a big disappointment in my eyes. They really should of went for 3gb of ram in that thing for the price they are trying to get for it.
I think the whole "it only has 2GB ram" thing is a bit overblown. We're talking about cell phone apps, not desktop. Unless you are multi-tasking with 15 apps open, it will not matter much. As a test on my Nexus 6, I opened over 30 apps in succession, (including a couple 3D games) and was only using 1.7gb ram. So in reality, even a somewhat heavy multi-tasker will probably never need more than 2gb.

We have been brainwashed in a sense to think more is always better. On top of what I just said, android is very good at ram management, and will free up ram as needed. Complaining about the amount of ram on an (upper) mid-level phone is pointless. If you're that much of a power user, then the N5x is not for you.

I agree with you for the most part but the real test is opening all those apps and then returning to them and seeing if they have to reload or not. If an app gets killed it won't reflect in the ram usage but you will see the reloading.

Obviously some of this falls on the app developers and if an app requires a reload it won't matter how many g's and b's of ram you've got.

To me that's what I care about though, do I see a performance hit i.e. the device starts to slow and do I see apps constantly reloading because they're being killed off to keep ram available.

I'm lucky to get 2 hours of SOT, I've got the moto X pure edition now but I have to return it for the nexus. I'm waiting until the last possible minute though so I don't have to go back to the N5 any longer than necessary. My GPS problem is while navigating I get constant "GPS Signal Lost" and then "Oh yeah, remember we lost signal, well you were supposed to turn a few miles back"

I'm not happy about having to go back to it but at least there is a beautiful graphite light at the end of the tunnel.

That sucks, I think maybe it was the first batch of N5's that had the GPS issue. I thought I saw somewhere it was in the initial shipment, did you get yours on launch day?

Yes! A beautiful graphite light at the end of the tunnel! I can't wait.

Yes, I ordered early on launch day, got mine right away and I've had all kinds of problems.

I also chalked it up to my heavy usage and the device being encrypted but I haven't had the same issues with the MXPE edition so I really do think this phone just has a problem.

Just counting down the days now, maybe I'll freeze myself until November....

I left out the part where I tested most of them. No problems, smooth as silk. We're not past the point where more than 2gb is mandatory. 2gb will satisfy 99.8% of users out there. Unless you're purposely trying to overload it. But in real world usage, and android's built-in ram management, I guarantee it won't be a problem. People just get caught up in numbers.

Agreed, thanks for adding the bit about returning to the apps for clarification.

Project Fi did it for me. I originally had a 32gb 5x with nexus protect plus tax and next day shipping I was looking at ~$544 I quickly had buyers remorse so I cancelled and signed up with Project Fi just for the financing. It was clear choice once financing was factored in I even went up to 64gb just for better potential resale difference was ~$2 vs 32gb. Once retro nexus protect is available I will spring for that. My data usage is normally very low 400-900mb a month and I have excellent Sprint coverage in my area. I expect I will have a credit refund each month. All in all I come out ahead still on my bill even when factoring in overage. After playing around with an iPhone 6 plus a coworker has I was like that's not that big I can handle that. Then the 6p specs and design just look amazing for the price.

Project Fi did it for me.

I use Project Fi, and it's been mostly smooth. However, it's really only good for people that use very little to no data. In the last 30 days on Fi, I've used exactly 20mb of data. I will get a $10 refund (I basically used no data) bringing my bill to $24 for the month. For people like me, (and maybe you) it's great. But for heavy data users, there are better plans.

My personal impression... 5X was what I wanted mainly because of the size. Then I talked to a friend that now has a Note 4... he said he really likes the size now and said it doesn't feel too big. But when the 5X officially and only had 2G RAM, a plastic body, and lighter hexa-core processor... and started with a 16G version, and NO 64G version. Then I compared that to the 6P, 3G RAM, metal body, good octa-core processor, and the base was a 32G version, and it had the 64G version. Prices was not a object... if the 5X had the same or close to the same specs and was a premium build I would have purchased the 5X, but I was swayed to the 6P by watching the Google presentation live.

I pre-ordered an Ice Blue Nexus 5X on Day 1. If you were following the rumors & leaks, then you already knew what RAM and storage options were. The RAM was a disappointment but the Nexus 5 has showed me that I'm not the type person who needs above 32GB of storage. On Day 2, yesterday, I cancelled my pre-order. It seemed like more and more disappointing news about the 5X was coming out of the woodwork.

No EIS and only having a single front-facing speaker were the final straws for me. A Googler flat out stated the 808 chipset wasn't fast enough for EIS. This doesn't sound like a phone I wanted to keep for 2-3 years. On the other hand, the 6P could last me 3 years.

awesome! we're gonna love the 6p ... you're getting a lot for that extra $70, a ton actually. can't wait for Nov 4!!

Agree... that was probably the one thing I did not say... it is "an amazing looking phone"!!!

Going to be tough to beat Cricket Wireless prices but I had Republic Wireless for a year and I learned to manage WiFi much better. I figure if I use my monthly avg that I have been having over the past year I will be well under.

Biggest comment I have heard from coworkers have been how they might switch to one. Most are on Verizon and most are in dire need of updates.

If only I had good wifi at work.. I could be on Fi or any carrier really with an extremely low data plan.. But our wifi at work is garbage so I depend on mobile a lot.

The one thing I wish they had was either wireless charging or removable battery.

I get that Nexus probably won't have removable batteries, but wireless charging? Its like Google had it going for a long time (4, 5, 6) then just gave up.

In the reddit Q&A the developers said they ended up going with the USB Type-C and it charged fast enough and easier to connect than standard usb, that they didn't think it was necessary for the wireless charging.

Well... I guess that's what happen when leaks and speculation turn into someone actually holding the phone in their hands. It's clear that Google intended the 6P to be the 'flagship' of the two and tried to get the absolute best phone built for the price point. Other than a couple of omissions (OIS, Qi), there really isn't anything that sounds like they cheaped out on. And they slapped a $499 tag on 32G model....

Whereas the 5X is clearly a mea culpa the value=Nexus crowd.... Google kept hearing cries to build a budget friendly 5" replacement for the Nexus 5, so they built a (somewhat) budget friendly 5.2" version of the Nexus 5X.

But 'Compromise' tends not to wow crowds, and it was clear after the rollout that the 5X was such a compromise. And to make matter worse, the 'didn't compromise' is only $70 more (comparing 32G models).

Is the MXPE really that bad with battery life, I'm torn between the 6p and the MXPE. I have a Galaxy Note 4 and TouchWiz lag is ridiculous, the phone is about a year old and it sucks now.

In my use, I can get "all-day" battery life on my Moto X Pure Edition.
