Why was the Gnex's camera chosen?

Per BMX. this is so. His comment implied that in order to get the instant shutter performance they chose to only write 5 MP images.

Has anyone heard if it is only a 5mp sensor, or are they using a larger sensor and only "using" 5mp to keep the instant shutter speed up to par? If it is a larger sensor, maybe same as GSII, I wonder if someone could change the option for instant shutter?

We need ifixit to tear one apart so we can see what is going on inside...

I believe its Max is 5mp. I'd be more curious if it drops when using instant shutter quickly FROM 5mp.

I thought the galaxy nexus can handle low light better than the S2. In my opinion, the S2 can't even handle low light that well.

Yeah, I thought that once and ended up with the Thunderbolt. I want to do video with my camera and indoor video in typical home lighting on a thunderbolt is so useless that the phone might as well have not come with a camera.

I hope your joking; the camera on the Thunderbolt is great...

Don't know. You can also ask the question, why isn't my face in-between Kim Kardashians Rack? It's obvious better than my between a bunch of pillows.

It's the mysteries we live with day to day.

lol

I'm laughing because out of every girl's rack you could possibly choose to make an analogy out of, you chose Kim Kardashian?! lol

Anyone find it funny how poorly it performs in low light after Samsung and Google specifically hyped up how well it would do under low light situations?

This actually reminds me of the OG Droid Launch. In the initial commercials for it they said it could take good pictures in the dark (or something similar like that) but once it was released, we found out it was a terrible camera all around.

Disappointing for sure...

I agree.. I was always hoping google will come up with a phone that will beat the iphone in all aspects including the camera.. So when they proclaimed the camera in the Nexus was optimized for low light situations I thought it would be an awesome camera . But almost every review says it is not as good in the low light situations. This is going to be my first android phone and I wanted it to be the greatest phone ever made. Hopefully some kind of software fix might be able to help the camera take the picture's it truly can.

Engadget called it the greatest phone on the market.

The Verge's Chris Ziegler tweeted today that it is the best phone he's ever used.

Don't worry, you're gonna love it!

Thank you for the reassurance.. I'm sure it will knock all the existing phones out of the field..

Is that really that crazy? Some of us have personal preferences. You can point at any number of things that might be small to you but are huge to others. Personally, i would never buy a phone just to have vanilla android when i could root any other phone and have the same effect.

Droid Charge shipped with an awful file system that crippled the phone. Rooted and installed stock Gingerbread vs the old Froyo, ran faster but still lagged. Updated to the official Gingerbread, same version number - night and day difference in quadrant. Lag completely vanished.

How does a rom filled with bloatware perform better than stock android? Because the official roms were optimized for those phones. #whypeoplebuyphonesthatshipwithvanillaAndroid.

I wonder if the reviewer setup the camera to the correct settings to take low light pictures? I have seen couple of reviews with pictures taken at night time with the GN and they where amazing. Since the review selected the correct settings.

My wife and I are looking forward on having the GN for VZW, and having 2 small kids the zero camera shutter lag is a HGE plus for us.

Everything has it's limitations. If that were not true, there would be one phone that did it all perfectly and no other devices would exist. We don't even know IF the GN has this issue, but if it does, there are 3 options:

1. Use flash.
2. Use the camera everywhere except in extremely low light.
3. Buy a different phone.

Not excepting this particular limitation (if it's even true) is ridiculous. Nobody can type 80 words per minute on a cell phone (please don't bother reciting some singular, record setting cell phone typist), yet we readily accept this fact. We just adjust what we do on the phone within it's known limitations...shorter emails and SMS.

The camera is probably the last thing I care about yet, it's the most showed in the hands-on videos. I only use my phone's camera for fun or if I want to take a quick pic of something. Most of the pictures I really want, I take with my regular camera.

So now I care a little more about the camera. But, I'm quite happy with what I've seen with the Galaxy Nexus so far. 5 megapixels is just fine.

I had a Thunderbolt too. Biggest mistake in phone choices I've made. I had forgotten how horrible HTC is when they choose batteries for their devices.

Exactly. Plus more pixels doesn't not necessarily equal better pics. Phones, are extremely limited in space for a camera. People are always impressed with the iphone 4 for its camera, I'm not in agreement on that one. Mostly because I think there are too many pixels for a camera that size.
