Why won't my Samsung Galaxy S5 recognise charger?

I've had a Samsung Galaxy S5 for about a month with no problems. Upon losing my old charger, I bought a new one (Samsung brand) and found it does not charge my phone. The phone shows no sign of charging and the battery symbol does not show it's charging animation, but when I unplug the charger the phone reacts as if I've unplugged it. It works fine with a friend's charger, and my new charger works fine in another phone. What's going on?
