Why would App X need permission Y?

I mean to record sound/noise, focused on sleeptime.
I found many of the available apps require:

+ Other
* view network connections (1)
* full network access (2)
* change your audio settings (3)
* prevent device from sleeping (4)
* run at startup (5)

Why would possibly an app for what I want require permissions 1-5?
In particular, 1 and 2, which are the most frequently requested.

One thing you can always do is to email the developer and ask them. Sometimes they'll actually explain why.

The white-hat answer is that there are features of the app that need those permissions.
If you don't use those features, turning off those permissions should still allow the app to run.
