Wi-Fi use when not switched on

While checking my battery usage screen I've noticed that the Wi-Fi is showing that it has been on for hours, but on the notification panel the icon is greyed out. If I don't have the Wi-Fi radio switched on, why does is it say it's been using battery? Also, if it's not turned off, how do I turn it off?

If you have it set to always allow scanning (the default) it will scan for a wifi signal every few minutes. Go to wifi, press the menu button, go to Advanced and turn that off. (It will still show "scanning" when you're on the wifi page, or it can't show you the available wifi signals, but that stops when you close the page.)

Do you mean the scanning always available tick box? If so, I've unchecked it so will see what effect that has.
I'm wondering if that would have anything to do with the 25% battery drain in idle problem I've been experiencing. I guess constantly scanning would use a small amount, but if the Wi-Fi icon is off I assume it's not connecting to any networks that would cause that amount of drain.
