wi fi

there are times because of poor service i want to turn off wi fi. when i push wifi to the left it won't stay off, goes back to wifi which is poor reception. how do i keep it off

Go to System Settings/Wi-fi/Advanced, and make sure Auto-connect is unchecked. See pg 112 of the manual: http://cache.vzw.com/multimedia/mim/sam_galaxy_s3/Samsung_Gallaxy_S_III_manual.pdf

this is s3, i have none of those titles under settings. nor do i have a manual but will follow that link, thanks for posting

That's strange. The manual is for the Verizon Galaxy S3, which is the phone that this particular forum is for. Is your S3 from a different wireless provider, like Sprint or AT&T?

There are some variations between carriers, but I find it hard to believe that you can't even find the Wi-Fi section under Settings - perhaps pictures will help:
1. From any Home screen, press the Menu button (the capacitive button to the left of the physical button on the front of the phone). Choose Settings

2. Tap on the Wi-Fi text (not the On/Off toggle on the right)

3. Press the Menu button again and choose Advanced

4. Auto-connect is the first item in the list

It's certainly possible that your carrier removed that option.
As a previous poster asked, what carrier are you with?

that menu is not there. i am verizon, las vegas, and have a samsung s3. settings, 2nd from top after airplane mode is wi fi, i click on that then at top of next screen is notify me, then a list of wifi networks available. that posting you show i find nothing like that. subsequently when i slide that wifi button to the left to shut down wifi, it pops right back up. i will have to go into the store

i went into the website and downloaded the manual. according to that i should be able to slide the wifi yes and no button to the left and it shuts down wifi, but it automatically slides back to the yes. Houston!

i found it, shoot menu is bottom left, advanced right there .. ha ha
