Please tell me I am wrong (gently) but I understood WiFi b/g/n to be dual band namely 2.4 & 5g. My nexus 7 second gen has the same and finds my dual band router effortlessly. Of course if I'm not wrong does anyone know of a fix?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Android Central! 802.11b/g/n refers to the wireless protocol, not the frequency that is used. The 2014 Moto G should be capable of seeing 2.4 and 5 GHz signals. Are you saying that your 2014 Moto G doesn't see the 5 GHz wifi signal from your router? On your Moto G, go to Settings>Wi-fi, tap Menu, then Advanced, and then look for an option for "Wi-fi frequency band." Make sure it's set to Automatic.

It's 2.4GHz only, no 5 GHz band. It should still pick up the 2.4GHz band on your router, it works fine on my dual-band router. If not, you might need to look into your router's configuration.

Oh, is the 2014 Moto G single band only (i.e., 2.4 GHz only)? I was basing my response on various reviews and specs that reported dual band capability. Could it be a regional thing?
