I have an AT&T phone that I switch service to T-mobile. The reason I switched was to be able to text while on a commercial aircraft. I'm unable to make wifi calling or text onboard a aircraft.

I've called T-Mobile, Samsung and AT&T. Everybody is pointing fingers at each other. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The first question is, can you text or call on Wi-Fi when *not* on an aircraft?

Put your phone in Airplane mode and then re-enable Wi-Fi (only). Can you make calls? Can you text?

Nope not able to even turn wifi calling on. I do have a T-Mobile SIM card.

I'm unable to call or text in Airplane mode

I have AT&T prepaid SIM and that pho me will not get wifi calling.

You need to take it to the t-mobile store. BYO phone and full plan. An $9 SIM card isn't enough. Which is what it sounds like from here.

I understand that but when the sales person said all features would work that same as with AT&T. I don't want to pay another 800+ for a phone.

No. Just BYO but monthly contract with T-mobile. Both AT&T and T are GSM.

Call or chat. I find chat to be better if you can't get to a store.

Prepaid Simms like you can buy on Amazon will never support WiFi calling. For that, those $20/month fees to connect to the T-Mobile network are essential part.

You need to flash it with T-Mobile software. I switched from Sprint to T-Mobile with an unlocked snapdragon S8+ and had many issues till I installed the T-Mobile software once I did everything worded fine.

Don't you sometimes just need to change APN setting?

(I would not flash phone. There are $300 deals out there to be had on tradeins and the like.)

You must have a branded AT&T or Verizon to use wifi calling on the respective networks. If you use non-branded or international, the wifi calling option isn't even available in settings. I found this out the hard way when I bought an unlocked Verizon phone for ATT network. Had to return the phone and buy a branded OS ATT phone.
