WiFi calling

When I use WiFi calling... Does that come out of my calling plan(minutes)? I don't have a land line at home,so I'd like to know if my minutes I WiFi are essentially free.
 
Yup, using WiFi Calling on your cellphone uses the same calling plan you have as if you were on the mobile network. So if you have limited minutes, using them on mobile or WiFi won't make a difference, they still count. UPDATE: It seems this only applies to T-Mobile, at least. As Almeuit confirmed below, these don't count on Verizon. Nice!

WiFi calling, however, is extra-useful when you're abroad, because as long as you're on WiFi, calling would be as if you were in the US, so no roaming/long-distance charges.

Actually.. I stand corrected. Just to be sure I reached out to Verizon via Twitter for you sira and they said the below.

It seems they aren't like T-Mobile and actually don't charge minutes for it. Well... I learned something today :).

This also goes for AT&T as well. Calls over WiFi do not count against your minutes but text messages do count against your text message plan if you do not have an unlimited text plan.
 
WiFi calling and texting uses the minutes on your plan just like you are on cellular.
Incorrect - see my posts above. It doesnt use minutes for wifi calling via Verizon which is what the OP has.

Ummm, no it doesn't. That's the point of WiFi calling. Unless you mean WiFi data, in that case, yeah, it uses data. Depending on your carrier, though, MMS might have to come through mobile data instead of WiFi.
 
When I was in Alaska earlier this year the website said wifi calling used your minutes. Here is what it currently shows:

1.How much does Wi-Fi Calling cost?
The Wi-Fi Calling feature is available at no additional charge, and is included in your existing monthly voice plan. Your Wi-Fi calls to US numbers, regardless of where you are located, are also free of charge (except for 411 and other premium calls). Wi-Fi calls to international numbers are billed as "International Calling While in the US" (also known as International Long Distance). If an international rate plan exists on your account, international calls are billed at those rates. A Wi-Fi Calling icon will appear on your screen during the call to confirm that it is using Wi-Fi to connect it. If the call is using the Verizon or a roaming network, standard voice charges apply.

Get more flexibility and international options on the new Verizon Plan. The new Verizon Plan gives you more data, Carryover Data, and other benefits like Safety Mode to help you get the most out of your devices. Learn more about the new Verizon Plan.

And if you read what I asked just a few days ago the VZW Rep confirmed it no longer does. If you find it is -- Point them to that tweet and ask why are you getting two different answers :).

It consumes data but not from your cellular plan. It specifically states the charges will depend on your WiFi access points access fee.
 
On AT&T with Wi-Fi calling enabled, even with Location set to "battery saving" mode, I found that periodically it would fire up the GPS (I can tell because the GPS Status app puts up a notification whenever the GPS is active). Over a day I was seeing about 20 minutes of GPS use (by Android System as reported by the Battery status).

I can understand it doing this (say) once per boot, but it was doing it several times a day, even on days when my phone moved less than 30 feet.

I'm wondering if it fires up the GPS to verify you are in an AT&T coverage area. The question is, if it determines you are not, does it refuse to allow Wi-Fi calling? That would be dumb (but consider that we are talking about the phone company here).
