Wifi "Connected, No Internet"

Every time my ISP (WISP actually) changes my IP address, my phone will have trouble following the change. My ip address was the same from 12/22 until this morning. Right now, the phone shows WiFi Connected, no Internet. I know I can unplug/plug the router to fix, but I'm curious why just the phone has trouble. The desktop (wired), wireless: laptop, Asus ChromeBOX and 3 ip cameras can find and follow the change (they are getting data). Tried rebooting the phone, no dice. My Samsung Galaxy Tab S isn't connecting either. I'm pretty sure I've had this problem about 5 years, with every Android phone (Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, Note 2, HTC EVO). Again, just curious.

Background, new router about 4 months ago (Netgear AC1750 R6400, previous was Netgear WNDR3700v2, Netgear WNDR1000v3). I use DynDNS because of the cameras.

re:

I have started having this problem after moving to a new NetGear C3700 on Comcast. I only use WiFi for my TV and Android. I usually use the 5GHz band due to the WiFi saturation in my neighborhood. I did not have this problem with ATT - I just had snail paced internet service. When this happens, the 5ghz wifi drops it's connection from the NetGear to Comcast, while the 2.4GHz connection keeps working. Since exactly the same thing happens at my Mother's house (Comcast, same modem), and her neighborhood is not WiFi saturated, I put it down to Comcast limiting the number of connections. If you don't have Comcast, that means my problem may be with the Modem.

Also, you seem to have a lot of devices on WiFi. I don't know how many signals your modem will support, but the C3700 only has the capacity for 8 WiFi connections: 2 x 2 on each of the 2 bands.

How I fix it: Rather than take the whole system down to fix 1 device, I usually log into the modem and change the WiFi channel. This forces it to reconnect to Comcast. Hope that helps.

re:

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried changing 5GHz's channel, no luck. My phone is usually on 5GHz, but tried changing to 2.4 and toggling the channel, no luck. I live fairly rural, my device only sees one other router. Nice to have something to try though, thanks.

I turn off the desktop, laptop and ChromeBox when not in use and the cameras are on only at night (I watch wildlife go by). I turn off to conserve power. My memory is that modern routers can handle way more devices than I'm throwing at this one.

Good luck!

I have this issue and i always have to forget the network then renter the password in order to get internet connection.

So, it looks like anything that forces the device to actually re-connect to the internet will reconnect the WiFi. It will also probably get a new IP address. So, if you have a device that wants a fixed IP (like my roommate's printer), this could be a big problem. For the 2.4GHz, can you set it at auto? I know this is disabled on some modems. It may help if you don't have a busy neighborhood.

New IP address this morning and phone can't connect. Tried forcing it to forget both networks, both 2.4 & 5GHz, no luck. Other devices are still connected, but my phone says Connected, No Internet. Tried turning off/on WiFi on the phone. Laptop is connected. Cameras (3 of them) are connected. I'm going to have to unplug the router.

I've been having wifi connect issues as well. After reading numerous posts, what seemed to fix mine is to go into Developer options - > Use legacy DCHP client and enable that.

Thank you hokee. The internet is full of ridiculous "solutions" that more resemble the lunacy of cargo cults than scientific experiment. People post because their "solution" worked once but offer no explanation as to why it might have worked. Blaming the router when one has two phones side by side, one running Lollipop and the other Marshmallow is just plain stupid.
I can confirm that on a Moto G 2nd generation your solution works through multiple reboots, power offs etc etc. And it clearly has some basis in logic as otherwise why would this option be present?
Google seem incapable of fixing the bug.

How do u even get to developer options? just an update and now I'm having the same problem it says I'm connected to Wi-Fi but no internet

Go to settings ---> about phone ---> build number. Tap on that 7 times in a row and it will enable dev options. You then have to back out one screen and scroll down to see it I believe.

I invested in new and better router and firmware thanks to DNSChanger router malware http://thehackernews.com/2016/12/dnschanger-router-malware.html?m=1

Not that yours is, but could as is one of the 166 routers vulnerable.

Security updates, esp from Apple, are notorious for breaking things. Internet needs Pat Hong, upgrade and support to handle ipv6, HTTPS everywhere, and billions of devices, the IoT.

The fact that legacy DHCP works is at least pointing in this direction.

i have turned that setting on but it still isn't connecting

For some reason, last week my phone stopped connecting to my home internet just as described in this thread. I had internet service, but it simply would connect to my home network and say "no internet." I knew my wannabe tablet (a NOOK) had internet access, but when I tried my laptop, it did the same thing as the phone. Turning the WiFi modem (I have AT&T 1-gig internet) off and on again fixed everything. I still don't know what happened, but I suspect the modem may have updated and needed a reboot.

Update. I did change the suggested dev option and the problem went away. I put a note on my desk that I had made this change so that I would remember that I did it. Months later I was looking at the note and couldn't remember why I had made change, so I turned the option off. The problem hasn't returned. Same router, I did do a firmware update months ago, but the update was for a security patch. The phone's had updates too. Sorry I'm not more helpful.
Still loving my 6P.

This is interesting, I started having this problem yesterday, and to this point I have no resolution.

I've tried a variety of things:
- reset my network settings (on the 6P)
- restarted all my APs (3), and made sure there was no firmware updates waiting
- turned on my routers' WiFi (temporarily, usually my APs supply all my WiFi, UniFi is sooo much better than any residential router).
- wiped phone cache (from the bootloader)
- rebooted my router

I'm at a loss, the only thing I haven't done, and really want to avoid, is a full reset.

Are others running into this, and possibly not noticing, because their cell connection is "picking up the slack"?

I'm almost positive it's some sort of DNS weirdness, I have a "Net Check" app, really simple, that verifies DNS, and then tries a simple HTTP and HTTPS connection, nothing fancy.
It fails trying to get simple DNS data, every single time, currently.

I can load a web page, sometimes, if I refresh enough, it seems to hit a "window", where it loads it. No chance on another link from that page though, it's dead, until I refresh umpteen times again.

I'm stumped, for now, hoping someone has some insight, thanks...

Yep, my desktop (with Ethernet disabled), my tablet, etc, all connect and pull pretty much my full speed connection.
No lags or anything else either.

I suppose the next thing is to dig into my router and AP logs, try to see what kind of DNS failures are occurring, for the 6P specifically.

I did get a Unifi firmware update 1 or 2 days back, so I guess that's at least "interesting".

It's also why I enabled my 5G network on my router, to try that instead of my APs, but I get the same thing, DNS failures, connected to that (completely separate) WiFi from my router as well.
I've done my share of s/w engineering and testing, so I immediately tried to isolate things, and check redundant systems, such as my (disabled normally) router WiFi.

Okay, that was weird, never mind, I guess.

I went to check all my logs (no DNS failures with my IP or MAC for the 6P, on either my router or AP controller), and I put the phone on charge, since I'd mostly nuked the battery with all the testing.
The only logging for the IP/MAC are my connects/disconnects, that's it, no other data failures, nothing (I found a handful of other DNS issues, but they were pretty stale, several days back, and other devices, NOT the 6P).

After charging a bit, I picked it back up, and now it's all fine, no DNS issues, it all just works. Thinking maybe it was tied to it being in "charge mode", I tried that too, but again, zilch, I disconnected it, and it still works, without issue.

I have no idea what just happened, if I should go buy a lotto ticket, or what...
I suspect the cycling of the charging did *something*, but who knows what, exactly.

Does the phone connect to Wi-Fi anywhere else?

Are you running the stock 7.1.2 build or the O beta?

I'd agree that a Factory Reset probably won't solve the problem. You did both an application cache wipe as well as a system cache wipe, yes?

I haven't used it anywhere else today, since the issue started/resolved.
I was using my separate router WiFi as my "other network" test, in this case.

Stock 7.12, for now, 05/05 patch.

I wiped my browser cache, but not the Net-Check" apps' cache, which is a good point.
I also did the system cache wipe.

Since it started working as soon I put it on the charger though, my guess would be that the app cache is pretty unlikely (since the charge shouldn't trigger that), one would think?

I was really expecting to see more (at least some) DNS issues in my router or AP logs, not finding any made it really strange, almost like it was failing to even correctly initiate an DNS lookup, all onboard (i.e. phone stack itself failing to hit the WiFi connection with a DNS request at all).

I did just try it again, and it works flawlessly still, weird stuff.

I did change my "Keep WiFi on during sleep" setting from "Always" to "Only while Charging", maybe 5-6 weeks back, because after 7.12 I was really having battery issues (mostly fixed by turning off Bluetooth, and WiFi, per this setting, when I wasn't using them).
I could see where there's a bug in the net stack, and my plugging in the phone caused a reset, say if something had been in a "sleep" state when it shouldn't have been. In that case, the power would've "solved" the issue.
It's strange though, you'd think that somewhere in my reboots (I think I did 2 or 3, including the system cache wipe obvious one) it would've reset the stack similarly.

That's my best guess anyway; I had forgotten I changed the sleep-WiFi setting when I posted earlier (not to mention it was some time back, and this was my first occurrence).

I do appreciate any ideas and posts, I'm hoping to avoid this going forward, obviously ;-]
