WiFi is weak

I'm really enjoying my HTC 10 but the WiFi range stinks on this phone. So I'm in a room a distance from the router and I'm using my Lg g3 watching videos online among other things and my one month old HTC 10 can't connect at all... Yes if I go down the stairs it will connect but it's a bummer that my almost three year old phone is kicking it's butt...I had hoped the 7.0 update would fix this problem, but I guess it's a hardware deal... The auto brightness is also a waste of time... So yea all phones have there downsides so I'll be keeping mine... What to do?

Is there a case on the HTC? Certain poorly designed cases might interfere with signal reception.

I changed my 10's wifi setting to 2.4 GHz from 5.0 GHz. Found this solved my distance problem and had no ill effect on signal quality. YMMV

Yes exact same issue with mine. I feel like the 5.0Ghz stinks on this phone. 2.4 GHz works like a charm. Great range too.

Keep in mind that the 5 GHz wi-fi band generally has poorer range than the 2.4 GHz band, and doesn't penetrate through walls and floors as well. The advantages of 5 GHz are that it's less congested than 2.4 GHz (and therefore gets less interference from other nearby routers broadcasting on 2.4 GHz, as well as from other electronic equipment like cordless phones), and the throughput is faster.

Go into wifi settings and click on dots at upper right. Click advanced and you should see the option.

But this also depends on if your router broadcasts 5 GHz. Do you know if your router is dual band (2.4 GHz/5 GHz)? Older routers only broadcast 2.4 GHz.

What carrier is the phone from? Certain carriers (coughAT&Tcough) can sometimes remove certain menu option and features from their variants.

I don't think you change that in your phone. I think you just connect to either a 2.4gHz network or 5gHz network. The phone is hardware ready for either connection.

That might depend on the phone (or possibly the Android version). I've definitely had phones where there's an advanced wi-fi setting to select 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or Automatic. In some other threads, I've also seen HTC 10 owners discuss this band selection menu, but since I don't have the specific phone, I can't say for sure.

Your router will broadcast both 2.4 and 5gb networks if it's new enough. Simply choose which one to connect to. The phone will automatically work with either one...

That sucks. I am on Verizon so no nougat yet, and I actually have better luck with 5.0 GHz on my phone.

I doubt that the removal of that option means that you can no longer choose 5 GHz networks -- I think it just means you can't force it to use 2.4 GHz only, or 5 GHz only. If your router broadcasts 5 GHz, the phone should still be able to see that network.
