Hello all, new transplant here from Precentral. I have recently acquired a Sprint LG Optimus s, I have rooted using gingersnap, and received superuser controls. my issue is when trying to enable WiFi tether I I get two errors when initializing tether.

1st error : Starting softap........... Failed
2nd error : activating WiFi interface....... Failed
all the other processes are completed and say done.

I have been searching for the last couple of hours to no avail. if anyone has any suggestions it would be most appreciated

WiFi tether is broken in ZVH. However it works in adhoc mode with Opti-Rom if you want to try that.

WiFi Tether is not broke in ZVH. It works fine on gROM in infrastructure mode. You need to apply the correct settings to make it work properly, lol

It does however have an issue where if you stop tethering the phone reboots. But you can still tether with it. And thats not a ZVH issue, that is an issue with the app itself.

Just sayin...

EDIT: Also if he rooted with Gingersnap he is not on ZVH.

Sorry i forgot to include some info. I am currently running Froyo 2.2.2, with ZVD software version.

Have you tried the app Quick Settings? It worked really well on my Optimus V.

It should work just fine on 2.2.2 as long as you download the version in the market and not the version on the Google code site.

I think but dont quote me on this... the Pptimus V has Froyo 2.2.1 so the Quick Setting thingy will work... But he has 2.2.2 and LG corrected the loophole in 2.2.2. But of course there are ways around that too but it requires a custom ROM, lol

I think you are confusing infrastructure and adhoc (or I am lol). Either way, it seems to work with either Rom. I don't seem to have the reboot issue when doing it on Opti-Rom.

That issue might be triggered by the app, but I would argue anything that can cause the phone to reboot unexpectedly is an OS issue, at least that is how a unix person would see it. With too much experience with MS, the distinction might get blurred :)

A little update here originally i was running the pdk. from the google code site and that is when i was receiving those errors. so i removed the app from the google code site, and installed the app from the market. Now I dont get any errors on startup and it says I am tethering at .4kB download, and .1kB upload, but none of my WiFi devices in the house (i.e. Nintendo dsi, Archos 605 WiFi, and a Toshiba Satellite laptop) will recognize it as an available network. I have also tried changing the channel to a channel that is not used in my area, and still i dont think it is working properly.

Thank you for your help so far. I will hopefully figure this out shortly

Ah-Haa Android Central FTW !!!!!

after going over a few of the suggestions here and restarting numerous times, all is well and tethering seems to be working awsome.

Thanks again for everyones help

Ad-Hoc is PC to PC mode. Like sharing a temp internet connection... That is what WiFi Tether 2.0.7 is. It does not have infrastructure mode (AFAIK).

Infrastructure is PC to Access Point (aka AP mode). You can only get that with the Sprint Hotspot (paid or otherwise) or the 3.x betas of WiFi tether.

What version of WiFi tether are you using in Opti?

Good point! Its all perspective on this one! lol ;)

Good to hear it's working for you!!

Ah maybe. I was definitely using 2.2.1.

Try open garden wifi tether in the market. If not, I know there are issues with stock zvd and tether. It is working in the various rom for zvd though. You could try reborn

I was having this same problem with my Optimus S.

Just rooted with gROM and the thing would not transmit properly over the WiFi Tether which came packaged with the ROM.

I found the answer on this forum after Googling "wifi tether" infrastructure mode.

I have no idea what infrastructure mode is. (I wish someone on these forums would explain it).

For whatever reason I had to go into setting and "change device profile" from Optimus S to Sumsung Epic 4G. (Mine isn't even a 4G phone). Anyway, it worked! Transmitting successfully for the first time. I'm a little scared by the warning in the forum saying "original intercept thread says people are now being charged, I haven't been charged yet but will see. Use at your own risk." I guess we'll see...

OK, tried to tether the phone to an iPad. The iPad saw my phone, but didn't connect. GRUMBLE.

Well, I still have no idea what infrastructure mode is, but the instructions in that link worked like a charm.

Will test it with the iPad tomorrow.

Well, this mysterious "infrastructure mode" is making tethering work like a dream!! The iPad linked with no problem whatsoever. Easy easy.

However, I still have no idea what this "infrastructure mode" is. Would someone (anyone) care to elaborate? Why does this method of tethering appear to be so bulletproof, whereas the other apps were spotty (to say the least?)
