So verizon is supposedly going to start charging $30 if u have grandfathered unlimited data plan and you want to tether.

I read this article on another website and on articles else where
Verizon 4G LTE Unlimited Data Customers Will Have Separate $30 Unlimited Tethering Plan - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

The article states that verizon will push an update to the phones so it disables the free wifi tethering and prompts you to accept charges for $30 a month in order to tether

but....what if you are rooted? you obv. wont get the update... what happens then ?

I don't know if it has anything to do with this but I got a txt from VZW yesterday and they said i needed to DL software or I would not be able to brows or update apps... I am running CM7 so I didn't get it, so far so good though.

They won't be able to stop you from browsing on your device but blocking tethering itself should be rather easy for them, since all they have to do is block outside MAC addresses from being able to browse from your IP. They already proved it a few weeks ago when some people who were tethering using a free app got a message from VZW saying they would be blocking it.

I heard that the way people got caught with the iphone and tethering is that the tethering software routes data through a specific APN so ATT could know what kind of data traffic it is

but then there are apps like PDAnet that route the traffic through the phones normal APN, thus making it appear as though it is just normal phone data traffic and not tethering

my guess would be that it pushes it through the APN that would allow verizon to know the difference

since this is the official tethering app

So what does the app wireless tether do then?

I believe we're talking about the "unofficial" wifi tethering app here. Will it still work with the new policies?

Fwiw, it does still work tethering my galaxy tab.
