Will 8GB suffice?

I was on Sprint, and then T-Mobile, and now back to Sprint, and neither one has good enough coverage where I live for me to be able to trust streaming music services. I just got a 64gb card the other day and I've already put 10gb of music on it, and I've only just begun to go through my 27,000+ mp3's to find what I want to put on the phone. I deliver pizza four nights a week, and have a 42 mile drive (one way) to school three days a week, so I need all the music I can get. I can tell you that even a 32gb version wouldn't be enough for me.

Why do you need these on your phone if you are just using it in your car? Can't get another mp3 player that will support more storage and use your phone as a phone?

Because I only just got a radio in the car that can do Bluetooth streaming, and since I already have the phone, might as well use it for navigation and music and podcasts. Why buy another device when my phone can do it all for me? Isn't that kind of the point of these fancy mobile computers?

The below is a comment I left on an article. Its relevant here, so I'm just gonna copy and paste.

I hate to say it but anyone would be a fool to get an 8GB model. For nexus devices the memory is shared. After system data on a 8GB model your only left with ~6GB useable memory. Now take into account apps are installed on that same memory. Also, pictures taken on the 8MP camera are gonna have a large file size. Another thing, with an HD display apps will automatically download HD data files instead of the standard resolution files (Mostly for games though). Finally (that I can think of), as technology grows so will app sizes. Take Asphalt 7 for example, it takes up 1.4GB alone.

Trust me, nobody get the 8GB version. Remember there is no way to expand the storage later on. Yes, 16GB maybe way more then plenty for some, but it's better to have it an not need it, then to need it and not have it.

Yeah, I personally understand the argument for cloud storage. I use dropbox and I love it. However, there is something to be said for physical storage. I'm like one of those people who started burying there money in the back yard after the stock market crash in the 30's. I always feel like "what if something happens???" So I always buy as much storage as my money will allow. I love the fact that my GNex packs 28 gigs out the box. If it supported expandable storage I would add another 16 gig or more. So I guess i'm a proponent for both.

I could buy the 8GB and have some room left, but after reading the article by Alex I'm in for the 16GB model. Google has made both very affordable, and I'm happy to spend more money to support them.

here is the link to the article that I mentioned

The cloud is great, but it still can't be trusted. There are always reports of various cloud services getting hacked, there are EULA's that prevent you from being able to store certain thing in the cloud, there are outages in internet service that prevent your from being able to access the cloud. I use Dropbox for school and love it as well, but I my local Dropbox folder is on my NAS, and on a thumb drive, and a portable hard drive.

where does spotify comes when comparing low storage... even if you have 128 Gb storage in your phone you still have to stream using data for spotify.

I assure you... Spotify has offline availability. It does not download the song though (mp3).... it downloads a file (.file) so you can hear the song still and it takes up NO data

actually a little over 5gb
yeah.and i'll tell you just 5 apps that will eat those 5 gigs in no time: asphalt 6, asphalt 7, modern combat 3, mass effect: infiltrator, nova 3. plus, this is one of those situations when the cloud is useless. for a non-gamer, i guess 8gb will be decent

I was just looking at the storage on my GSII and right now all together including what's on the external SD card I am using right around 9.5gb on this phone. Granted I have 6 gigs of pictures. So in reality I don't see any reason that I could probably not easily live with an 8gb phone. Although in this case I would probably go ahead and spring the extra $50 to get the 16gb version. However if I do end up getting one of these for my wife she will be getting an 8gb model. She is curently using a EVO 4G with a 2gb SD card and doing just fine with that. She is not a techie and she doesn't use her phone for music, movies or games so a phone with 8gb of storage is already going to be a vast improvement, and really all she needs.

I be live this says it all

8gb is absolutely more than enough...

why would anybody need to store that much data on the phone?

that's what the Google Cloud is for, isn't it?

(the above statement is only true for people who have smoked too much pot or drank a gallon of vodka)

This is so dumb Google. Why aren't the options 16GB and 32GB?

I totally get it. Cloud Rocks. Huzzuh! But 8GB is ridiculous. I have no games, but tons of apps and I'm already down to 2 GB left on the N7. If they are concerned about user experience, end user micro management of storage isn't helping in that department.

The answer is simple:

Look at the price.

:)

How much extra does it cost for the manufacturer to put 32gb, instead of 16gb or 8gb, in a smartphone or tablet?

$50? Who knows. However, considering the internals on this thing, it's an absolute miracle they can sell it for anything close to what it's going for. You're talking about internals reserved for $600-700 devices...for half that.

The cloud isn't reliable enough, internet service gets flaky or drop out completely. I've tried to use Pandora, Rdio, Spotify and Slacker on multiple different phones, with multiple different carriers, and the signal drops at times causing the music to skip, or takes too long to load. I prefer to keep my music on my phone locally.
This is my phone, and the music is still growing as I get everything I want onto my phone.
