Will dirty flash overwrite my data?

I am trying out the Reborn Rom for the Optimus and had some problems with some apps hanging at a black screen. The rom page says that I should flash the rom again over my current install which is called a dirty flash. Will this write over my data and the things I have installed?

My understanding of a dirty flash is that it is works like a merge; it overwrites existing files with the ones from the package you are flashing. So if you have installed a newer version of Vending.apk, it would be overwritten by the one in the file you are flashing (probably older in Reborn), if it contains one. Any new files would simply be added, any old files without incoming replacements would be untouched.
