Will I get the Froyo EC05 Over The Air Update with my customized Epic?

Using CW3 and TER on EXT4 now. By the sounds of it, I need to Odin back to DI18 with RFS in order to go to EB13. If that that is the case, then when root is obtained and custom ROM's come out with EXT4 support, can I just simply flash in CW3 since I already converted the file system? I really do not want to go back to RFS and then take all the time to reconfigure my device.

I got my Epic from eBay already rooted with Quantum ROM already installed. Would I be able to update manually? I was hoping it would break my root so I can start over.

EXT4 not working correctly yet. I'd wait if that' what you want.

Hello I am running dk28 and I am not rooted. I just wanted to make sure what I am about to do is the best and easiest way for me and what I want. I am suppose to use odin to revert backwards and then download the zip file and then boot to recovery same way I got dk28 right? Let me know please cause I am all dk28ed out. lol Thanks

From what I understand, you are correct. Simply use Odin to flash back to DI18 as you flashed forward to Dk28. If you are familiar with Odin it should be very easy.

I just did the flash from Dg17 to DI18 and although it was unnerving, it was easy after reading up and with much help from Paul627g

Thanks Paul.

Would I simply be able to flash any EXT4 ROM in CW3 or is there something else I need to do? Also, I thought EXT4 was better performing than RFS. Am I missing something?

Yes EXT4 is better. It is up and working now, you will have to wait for new ROM's to be developed for Froyo EB13 supporting CWM3.0.0.6 but that should only be hours to a day or so away at the rate things are moving.

if i have rooted and gone to ext4, if in a hypothetical situation samsung/spint came out with and update or patches for eb13 would we still be able to apply those with the ext4?

No, you would need a 100% stock system. But our Epic developer community usually posts a modified version of updates that can be applied to non-stock phones.

ok. Please help me to clarify some information. Like SVX stated, I too am on DK28/EXT4/CWM3 using midnight ROM and am interested in going to EB13. I think the above link just gives directions on how to root your phone, which will take me back to CWM2.xx, but not DI18. correct? However, I still have to go back to DI18 to get EB13. correct? If so, does anyone have a link to get back to DI18 from DK28? or is it the link under the thread "...fixing a Bricked Phone," which should take me back to Eclair (DI18)?

Then I must go to the Samsung website and execute the Epic upgrade file [Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13_Tool.exe]. correct?

So the steps would be:
Odin back to DI18
OneClickRoot to get CWM2.xxx
Upgrade from DI18 to EB13 via Samsung link

I have one question, I have been searching and I am not coming up with anything.

I have the bakedsnack rom and kernel on my phone, with no sprint apps etc. However I get asked / alerted about every 30 minutes that an update is available. Obviously im not going to do it, but should I even be getting asked? Is there a way to stop it lol, this will get real old seeing that I wont be able to do anything with it until late tonight.

LOL! Deal with it friend, theres probably thousands of people wishing they would get the notification for upgrade... If your going to upgrade later tonight then I would just deal with the notification until then, or you might mess something up and miss the opportunity..

Lol thanks, yeah some people want the alert, I wish it would stop.

I was just thinking it was odd that I was getting alerted with nothing stock on the phone.

Yes that is strange.. Unless you replace the Sprint bloatware it probably won't accept the update if you try to do it.

Hey All,

I'm a total Noob to Android but not to Linux or computers in general. I just got an Epic 4G and am hoping I don't regret making that decision over the Evo.

Anyway, my question is how do I root my phone and make it the most up to date I can. I managed to get it from DI18 to DK28 through Odin, but otherwise, I'm lost, I'm currently running Firmware 2.2.1, Kernel 2.6.32.9, and like I said Froyo DK28. I want to root this phone because apparently I upgraded it without rooting it. I also have ROM Manager Pro and Titanium Backup Pro but they say they won't work without root. I would also like ClockworkModRecovery.

Also, when I updated, I lost all of my programs and settings, but not my contacts (thank the gods). I just want to know how to protect these things also, will Titanium Pro do this?

Please Help

When I root my phone, will i still be able to get official updates from android?

As long as you dont change anything , then you will get the over the air, but the installation will make you lose root

your system needs to have all preinstalled software for the OTA to take, so if you change something you need to change it back

O_o... sorry, I promise I'm not trying to waste your time... but you just confused me... I think...

Wait... maybe my question should be...

When I root, can i keep the Froyo EB13 build?...only rooted?..

Or is rooting like having a whole different operating system, that doesnt use the same updates and etc..

root means you have super user permission,... like right now you dont have permission to change system files... when you have superuser permission you can change anything you want.

the process of rooting is putting files on your sdcard then through somthing called an "exploit" it moves the files from your sdcard into the system.

An exploit by definition means to take advantage. So the process of rooting means that there is a security hole in your system. the exploit finds this hole and takes advantage of the lack of security.

after this is done and you try to change something the system sees that the permission file is in place which means you are able to change what you want.

so the analogy that i use is ,
you go to the home that you own, you go to the front door and you find its locked and you have no key , so you see a window that is cracked open a bit, you grab a crow bar and you jam it in open the window. crawl in and you unlock your front door. you now you can walk in and out of this house..

rooting does not change your system at all, it just unlocks the door

okay, ive read, and ive heard that in other ways... but that helped...

so when i root... i still get the same updates/support...even with different ROMs and things like that?... just making sure... thanks
