Will I get the Froyo EC05 Over The Air Update with my customized Epic?

okay, ive read, and ive heard that in other ways... but that helped...

so when i root... i still get the same updates/support...even with different ROMs and things like that?... just making sure... thanks

no if you change system files when the update tries to install it will it wont you will get errors. ....a ROM is completely changing all the files on the phone so you def wont be able to load the official update. you will need a stock file and flash it with odin , then you can update

I'm rooted with no ROMS but I did switch the file system to EXT4. Is this going to be a problem?

Yes once you made the switch to EXT4 filesystem you are running a custom ROM even though its simply Stock Froyo EB13. You had to flash a ROM in CWM to complete the conversion. Once you did that you lost your OTA update eligibility.

Use procedure #1 to restore to Eclair 2.1 (DI18) or procedure #2 to restore to Froyo EB13 from the link below.

z4 mod

Does z4 mod do anything to the file system that would make the phone incapable of receiving an OTA update? I rooted the phone so I could use SetCPU. I didn't install a MOD, and the filesystem is still the same.

That is a temp root, you should be okay. Installing 3rd party apps doesn't effect the OTA as long as you have all stock bloatware intact.

thanks to you, and whoever redirected me to this page, sorry i didnt post here first hah..

"But the real question is, why update OTA? I personally have never updated OTA, I always update manually."...

so.. Once I'm rooted ill probably have a custom ROM, EXT4 if its worth it, uninstall all the sprint apps that i dont use...etc.. Should i still get the "OTA" updates manually?.... If so, they should be posted on this main "Epic 4G" thread right?... and I need to use clockwork for them?

I assumed OTA updates were pretty much just for the stock Froyo build and etc..... If i rooted, i wouldn't need them anymore?... Or do the OTA updates help with more than just updating the stock ROM or whatever....

OTA updates are for those who run stock build, don't plan on rooting usually.

Custom ROMs are normally based off the "stock build" so within a few days you will see all the popular ROM devs change over their ROMs to support the new release.

Returning to stock and receiving the OTA update won't benefit anyone running custom ROMs "read above".

Okay, thanks... One last question as far as updates, sorry

If i decide to root, change to EXT4..whatever that actually will do for me, take off all the "bloatware", etc... Then decide I want to go back to stock everything...
I can do the "Flash/Restore to Froyo EB13" method from the sticky at the link below and I'll go back to stock with OTA updates again?

Thanks a lot for everyone's help.. This forum is the stuff.

To return to stock form to receive OTA update you will need to perform procedure #1 in the link below.

Would I be correct in assuming someone here will have a version of EC05 shortly that will work with the EXT4 file system? I put EB13 on mine with the ext4 and don't really want to step back just to get the OTA update.

Yes once one of the devs gets their hands on a working update.zip or .tar file there will be deodexed versions released and I'm sure EXT4 will follow shortly afterwards.

Bonsai v4.0.0 and midNIGHT both have working EC05 ROMs already.

This is all great stuff but I am staying in syndicate rom frozen (eb13) at the moment until an official update.zip comes out from samsung or at least something similar. Bonzai rom looked great but usb mass storage wasnt working and that isnt a good sign when 5 minutes into the upgrade you realise there's a problem already

I think the best way to revert back from EXT4 is to:

Reboot into Recovery
Choose Restore
Restore to before EXT4

Just trying to flash back to an old ROM did not work for me, so I'm trying the above now (not the exact steps, but you'll get the idea).

What you're doing is restoring data from a backup. EXT4 is not data - it is the type of filesystem your data is on. Clockwork cannot "restore" you to RFS. You need to format your filesystem using Odin.

I would appreciate if someone can answer me. I'm on eb13 rooted (with the "procedure 2"). As far as I understand from this thread is that I can still get an ota update even if I'm rooted. However, in order to get hulu to work I flashed a zip file to allow hulu on my epic. Is it considered as if I have a custom rom now or can I still receive the OTA update? Also, will the OTA "unroot" my epic? Thanks!

In theory it shouldn't (I've never gotten an update over the air so I can't 100% confirm), but worst case scenario - just reroot.
