Will my Wi-Fi still try to connect after I shutdown my phone?

Does the Wi-Fi stay connected or attempt to a network while it is turned off, or does it turn on when the phone powers on and it recognizes a network it can connect with? I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (in case it matters)
