During summer my Samsung galaxy s8's battery ran out, and when I rebooted it would not accept my PIN.
Now I have 3 tries left until it wipes my data.
It is running android Pie.
I have talked to Samsung, and they could not help, since it is the OS.
Searching around the net some people suggested cleaning the cache. I tried but this did not work.
After a hard reset it did not work.
Trying to unlock it with Samsung online tool did not work, it could not find my phone.
I found someone talking about a default password, but I am only able to enter numbers.
Can I use my google account in any way? Or get it connected so I can use Samsung online unlock?
Or make it roll back maybe?
And you I should have had a backup, but alas i have none.

Welcome to Android Central! I moved this from the Pie forum to the S8 forum for more specific traffic.

Did you also try Samsung's Find My Mobile to remotely unlock?

If your not log into your Samsung account on the phone then do factory reset o recovery it will ask for your Google password and account

Thank you for moving it : )

Yes, that is what I tried to say with the Samsung online tool, I just misremembered its name. Presumably it does not work since the phone is not connected on any network before decrypting.

Hi, welcome to AC !

You can do a factory reset in recovery .

I assume it can not log in until I turn it on. I have logged in previously if that is what you are asking, but I don't think I have backup turned on. I could at least not confirm it anywhere.
I will probably end up doing the factory reset, but I really didn't want to lose some of my files.

I don't know why it does not accept my PIN, but is it possible it encrypted it with something that is slightly different to my PIN? Or is the PIN saved encrypted?

If you had previously been backing up through Google and Samsung account you will get some of your back up back , use these keys to get into recovery.

With phone off press power button then immediately hold power button/volume up sane time to recovery , if you see a dead bot just press the same buttons again briefly and select factory reset.

My google account has nothing backed up, and I don't think I backed up via Samsung either. Is there a way for med to check? I can't find anywhere in my Find My Phone account that tells me whether I have something backed up.

Is there no way to use Find My Phone with cable and not through the network?

No , goggle find my phone only let's you track or erase device, Samsung let's you remotely , so if you want get into your phone factory reset in recovery.

Since you did a hard reset (I assume you meant a factory reset), your data is gone, so you don't have to worry about wiping it. You can use any WiFi connection - if you normally had WiFi enabled. If not, you'll have to reflash the ROM. (You may be able to find it at https://www.sammobile.com/Firmwares/ - flashing it is simple, use Odin.)

I have not done a factory reset, sorry if I used the wrong terminology.

I ended up doing a factory reset, and it all works now. But that is not really news, factory reset just doing it's job.
The data is lost, I should have had a backup, lessons learned, all that.

What frustrates me is that Samsung is able to remotely unlock the phone with the Samsung account and Find My Phone, but not by cable, or at least not on boot.
I understand that the encryption on startup is intended to work that way, i.e. no way around it. It gave me false hope.
I don't know that is how it would work, and they could explain that more clearly maybe.
Secondly I didn't know I had a data wipe policy enabled for some 30 tries during boot, I specifically went through the settings trying to turn off that, because of children.
Third it was vary frustrating that it suddenly didn't accept my PIN code, but nothing is perfect I guess.

Thank you for all your responses : ) i needed a little push to go through with factory reset.
