will people really shell out almost $1,000 for a Pixel XL with 128gb? ($947 after tax)

Re: will people really shell out $869 for a Pixel XL with 128gb?

surprisingly, i was gonna buy the XL but with the additional cost of 120USD, and 100+USD for 128Gb of storage, i said, "nope!" and went for the pixel 32GB black. i'm not sure how it will feel on my hand since i'm coming from a oneplus 1 with a 5.5 screen but i think i can adjust to it. That .5 sure makes a big difference. but it does not justify the 120+USD price tag for me.

edit; i figure i go with the 32gb because of the cloud for pictures and videos and i don't have tons of apps on my phone. Plus i'm always close to locations with wifi that will sync my photos to the cloud.

We all should be free to state our opinions on this forum, whether we love it or hate it. If you love it so much, then sell it to me. If I hate, I should be free to tell someone why I wouldn't buy it over say, a One plus 3 which is half the price and does everything that I would need from it.

It was clear in the unveiling, that they are targeting iPhone users. For crying out loud, they are including an adapter to sync your iPhone data to the Pixel.

I know that I'm going to get a lot of flack for saying this but the Nexus program hasn't been well received by the mainstream market. A large majority of iPhone users who've switched to a Nexus in the past haven't enjoyed the phone as much as they'd hoped. Clearly, Google needs to target Apple, instead of the other Android smartphone manufacturers. Apple is their competition, not Samsung or LG or Motorola. So I can understand why the Pixel resembles an iPhone so much.

Google wants to sell the Pixel to the mainstream. They need to make more money off their devices than that have in the past with the Nexus. They know that in order for them to be successful, they have to effectively sell it to the masses and not just a small group of tech enthusiasts like ourselves.

I, personally, am torn. I was hoping that it would've been cheaper than what it is. I was hoping that they would've kept stock Android as we've come to know it. But I would buy one using the payment plan if I were due for an upgrade and I still was comfortable paying $30/month.

But, I have been at the point for a while, that I would be perfectly ok with a $3-400 phone that does 90% of what the Pixel can do as well as any other "flagship" phone in that price range.

Remember, Apple is Google's biggest competition. And vice versa.

Purchased the 32gb one. If there was a 64gb option I would probably get it but I know I won't use 128gb and that price is too high for a phone I'll probably replace in a year.

Re: will people really shell out $869 for a Pixel XL with 128gb?

I just ordered the XL 128GB with protection plan.

I will sell my perfect condition Note 4 on ebay for $200 to offset some of the cost.

That being said, I hate phone prices nowadays. I hate the ridiculous markup on something that costs $200-250 to build. Sure, add in marketing and other stuff, but still a ridiculous markup.

How do you know the resale value of a device that hasn't even been delivered to people yet?

The only phone that holds a nice resale value is the iPhone (period).
Everything else will normally go for less than 50% the price of new in 6-9 months. I phone is more like 60-70% resale value. I buy and sell a lot of used phones, so I'm pretty good at this game. If I had to guess I'd say this phone will be well under $500 in 6 months...7 max.

Resale value of android phones are never that great. Usually best is Samsung and then cheaper phones but everyone else usually drops. iPhones hold their value. Historically google phones haven't which I don't think a name change will change. But yes it's an assumption.

Only different if you care about resale value.

Pretty much. I am not worried about the reselling of it since I want to keep it for awhile.

Just read this is a Verizon exclusive at launch? So are you pre-order folks pre-ordering on Verizon then? It didn't say how long the exclusivity lasts.

It's exclusive to Verizon in the US as far as carriers go, meaning AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and the smaller companies will not offer it for sale. It is not strictly exclusive to Verizon, though.

I will certainly not. Companies are getting more greedy by the day

Thanks for the explanations. I was genuinely curious. I only typically sell my phone every 18 months to 24 months, when I get a new one. Looks like my Note 4 is going for $200ish in good condition right now.

Re: will people really shell out $869 for a Pixel XL with 128gb?

Resale value is a circular argument. That's saying it's valuable because it's valuable. People pay $1000 for an iphone because they think that's what they're supposed to do. People pay $750 for a used iphone because they think that they're getting a great deal.
Unfortunately for Google, their customer base is a bit different. Apple has the mindless consumer base locked up.

Re: will people really shell out $869 for a Pixel XL with 128gb?

that price makes me think about it a LOT. I usually just step up on the new phone, but over $900 with tax is a little daunting. The 6p is performing well.

Re: will people really shell out $869 for a Pixel XL with 128gb?

That is very, very pricey but 32GB is NOT enough in this current phase of technology... What do I limit... music, apps, pictures? (and yes I know about the "unlimited" Google Photos storage)...

iPhones have really good resale value... just like my Mercedes. I sold my my last Mercedes E wagon after 3.5 years and 81,000 miles.(had just 11 miles when I bought it... then a lot of roadtrips between Chicago and New York and Atlanta) I was kind of shocked that I got almost 62% of the original price back. I sold it to the pre-owned department at a Mercedes dealer. . if I had the time to sell it myself, I could have sold for more?

Re: will people really shell out $869 for a Pixel XL with 128gb?

I'm considering it, honestly.

Most people are stuck on contracts that subsidize your phone...so you have to get the most phone you can...
