Will the bootloop fiasco affect sales of the V30?

From the G4/V10/Nexus 5x? I think many people are put off by it, always seeing comments about bootloop and saying "I'll never get an LG again". Some people were lucky to get a free replacement even out of warranty. Apparently they fixed it starting with the G5/G6 and V20. Do you think LG can push through this?

Edit: If you're wondering, they did fix the bootloop defect starting with the LG G5 and V20. LG was reportedly replacing phones free of charge for those that had the issue (especially the LG Nexus). I wouldn't be concerned going forward, though some may not trust LG from their previous experience and from people's comments on social media and YouTube.

If Samsung can brush off the Note 7 battery fiasco last year and still attract huge hype for the Note 8 like it never happened then I'm sure LG can get past this. They don't have the marketing power of Samsung but if they can keep putting out good phones and the older phones like the V20 and G5 and the current G6 etc don't have any widespread issues that surely proves they are reliable again and give potential buyers trust

The Nexus 5X was a different issue that also affected the Nexus 6P.

I don't think it will seriously affect sales. I'm more concerned about the V30 Plus and region-specific specs as seen with the G6.

Re: Will the bootloop fiasco affect sales?

If the V30 offers decent features, looks and at a reasonable price I think it has a good chance of success regardless of the bootloop issues as Samsung's Note 7 demonstrates, the fact that devices were still catching fire after the first recall hardly gives much confidence in the proof that the S8 was fine. Toyota were also a good example, managing to keep themselves as one of the world's biggest car sellers despite several massive recalls after several deaths caused by their cars and more recently VW have managed to become the largest car manufacturer in the world despite the massive scandal around the cheating software in their diesel cars.

I don't know what LG are like in other territories but certainly here, the problem isn't the bootloop issue it's much simpler - the V20 was a poor seller in Europe because they chose not to sell it all despite having the market handed to them by Samsung's disaster with the Note 7. For one of the UK importers it was one of the most requested handsets they'd had, LG still didn't release it:

We will not be selling the LG V20 - Not launching in the UK or Europe

The LG G6 was released here but a lower specced version (less memory and no DAC) and at a higher price, not far off the S8 with a faster processor, more storage, a better screen and a more eye catching design. It's hardly a surprise it hasn't sold well either, marketing and branding doesn't come into it. I like the look of what's known of the V30 but I'm concerned it's either going to be overpriced and underspecced for here or just not sold at all.

Re: Will the bootloop fiasco affect sales?

In my case I won't be getting a V30, since I just got a new V20. I'm aware of the issues with bootloop on the G4, but that did not affect my decision to buy a new V20.

Bootloop issue fixed with G5 and V20. May be some rare cases but those are unrelated. My V20 has been rock solid and no performance drops.

Re: Will the bootloop fiasco affect sales?

Bootloop issue might...it depends on who potential customers talk to.

Folks on this forum are not the majority of users; when we head to a store we usually know what we want, and why we want it, and are usually aware of any potential issues and the likelihood they will encounter those issues. The majority of customers will ask techy folks like ourselves, their friends, and more importantly, store staff. Marketing and general name recognition is obviously up there.

Aside from us, most customers will head into a store with an idea of what they want (ie. and iPhone, a Samsung, etc), but still unsure of specifically. If the store staff start picking up and suggesting the V30 and encouraging customers to hold it in their hands, etc. then there will be a snowball effect where other other customers will see the device 'out in the wild' and be interested.

If store staff got burned after recommending other LG devices in the past, they will be less likely to recommend the V30, and this is where the past bootloop issues bites this device in the butt. I thought about some other conversations I have had on this board when I was at the mall this past weekend, and I was in my carrier store and I asked if the G6 was popular and how it was doing for sales and warranty claims, and the salesperson mentioned past LG bootloop issues before I even had a chance to ask specifically about it. They indicated that the G6 was not selling very well for them or their carrier (Bell Mobility). They were discounted quickly by Bell. I did not ask specifically if this salesperson hesitated recommending this phone because of bootloop issues in the past.

The past bootloop issues are def on the minds on the salespersons for sure, but no way to measure how much this actually affects sales. The people I have been talking to seem to say the G6 is a good phone and no exceptional warranty claims that I can tell from people I talk to, so that is a good sign that maybe this will be behind them.

Re: Will the bootloop fiasco affect sales?

4 months ago maybe? I had posted on it in the V20 forum after losing three G4s to the loop.

Mod Note

I cleaned up some posts. Please try and keep it on topic if you're going to post -- as in don't turn a bootloop thread into a huge discussion about Samsung and the exploding Note 7 batteries. If you want to discuss that then I invite you to make a thread and have at it.

Thanks!

Wasn't a big ordeal, they replaced it for me. Just the typical hassle of re-setting up a phone.

Wasnt even really worth mentioning except for the misconception that after the G4 and V10 the bootloop problem was solved. Wasn't as massive as the G4, but def was still happening, at least with some models of it

Using the G6 since April zero. Issues... And may upgrade to V30.. I had 2 G4 both bootlooped so got motherboard replaced under warranty since then G4 is working great it with my staff
I think LG has fixed bootloop in G6 and Upcoming V30

I really hope so, but anything about the V30 is pure speculation since it hasnt even hit the market yet. Hard to make a statement thinking they fixed a phone that isnt released.

I only know of your issue.... All of the others I've heard were different problem.

I'm guessing 95% of consumers don't even know about the boot loop issues they had, most people don't browse tech forums and tech news sites.
